is the 35sd twin turbo? if so what bhp
and anyone come from a e53 3.0d to a 35/40d (if there both twin turbo) and how much faster etc are they, would it satisfy someone who has a need for speed but loves his x5s practicality with the baby?
(oh and before the lectures, i dont mix the baby and the speed aspects lol)

35d is a twin turbo. 286bhp PS with the updated ZF 6-sp transmission. Both turbos are the same size I think.
40d is also a twin turbo with 306bhp and different sized turbos plus the ZF 8-sp box. Cheaper to tax, more economical and quicker (just).
E70 35d is almost 2 secs faster than the E53 (6.9 against 8.8 ), E70 40d is 0.3secs quicker again (6.6).
I went from an 05 E53 3.0d to the X6 40d and the difference is very noticeable (E53 & E70/71 are similar weights). The X6 is very quick (slightly faster than the E70) for a 2.2tonne vehicle, and as said above the X5 is no slouch either. The 8sp box is sublime. Both can do in excess of 140mph should you be brave enough to try it!

The one I've just spied is a 35d 08 and is deffo the cheaper tax same as my e53, its listed as 286bhp, but either way would deffinately map to 300+, I'm just toying with so many idea with cars, there is nothing wrong with mye53 in fact its the best car I've ever owned and problem free, though I do quite a few miles and the next year would see it go from 113k to 135k going on this year, problem is its so practical even more so now with my 3month old, and as much as I'd love a 535d both me and my girlfriend think I \ we would miss the high up comfort of the x5, and tbh I didn't realise that e70s were 20k and under now, my budget would be up to 25k but I would rather keep a little in the car budget for my own warrenty and also thinking of moving house

We kept the E53 after I bought the X6 because it was so practical, and it was only that the running costs got too high for tother half that she sold it and bought the Mini - and we really didn't need two X's. The Mini Countryman is great fun and a great little runabout, but the long distance runs are all done in the X6.

well i realy dont want to part with my old e30, she doesnt want the x5, and really we could do with one of the 4 cars being an x5 just for the practicality, i love m5s but their a little thirsty so im thinking maybe newer x5 and tune the e30 for speed with turbo conversion on that, the thaught of a 286bhp x5 is appealing to me, and 2 seconds quicker, the x5 is already (e53) a quick car really for what it is so the e70/71s must be insane, i wouldnt get an 8 speed as their out of my budget, but what year do they start on? also the twin turbo would be a must

I think the first ones appeared in April 2010, but may have been June before UK ones arrived. They do go rather well, almost too quick! Jason could probably get some silly figures out of a 40d

Moved from a e53 3.0d to a e70 3.0sd. There really is a great difference between the two. I think the sd has the two different size turbos as the power starts low and just keeps going. The only thing that has come as a bit of a shock is the increased fuel consumption.......on a long run i could get 30-31mpg in the e53 but only around 27 in the e70.
I am still to go out in a friends 40d so not sure what the difference is there and i could do with a trip out in someone elses anyway as ive got the adaptive suspension and i think that improves the ride considerably. Used to be an option on the earlier e70's but think its now limited to the bigger petrol engines

Adaptive suspension was removed from the diesel option list on mine too. Was available on the 30d and 35d, but now only on the 50i (in the UK anyway). Not sure if it can still be got on the 30i, as I never considered that as a realistic engine choice.

So being a novice at E70 is the 3.0sd the twin turbo and the 3.0d a single turbo one?
In which case where does a 3.5 diesel fit into it as that is also a twin turbo like the 4.0 diesel ?

The 'S' and 'SE' is just a higher/different spec......a bit like the original X5 and X5 Sport, just a trim thing. Different alloys, stiffer suspension, extra gizmos etc. I think the 'SD' is the later version which may be the 'cleaner' engine - cheaper to tax etc..someone on here should be able to confirm this last bit.
In any event they're all 3.0litre IL6 engines, but to differentiate between the single (30d) and twin turbo BMW called it the 35d - as they did across most of their ranges with that engine (335d, 535d etc).
Then just to completely confuse everyone the 35d model was dropped (except in the US), had a power increase, improved fuel consumption and reduced emissions, an engine variant/generation number change, new twin-turbo set-up installed and an 8-speed box fitted......and then failed to follow the previous naming conventions and became the xDrive40d..... ??? :crazy1:.........which is actually still a 3-litre, and still a twin-turbo....
Due to the cost of getting variants through the complexities of emissions regs in the US, they still do not have the xDrive40d version on sale and so are stuck with the 35d version only.
Clear as mud really..... :'(

Have a quick look here......
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_X5_%28E70%29
There is a model list that lists all the engines........and another one that gives performance figures too

I believe they now have a 'twin scroll' device?
