My E53 3.0 D is showing the yellow 4x4 light on in the middle of the dashboard. The abs light was also on but after disconnecting the battery it has gone off. I have tried pressing the DSC button but it doesn't go out. Any ideas? Btw it's a 55 plate.

Should go out if you start the car and then whilst stationary full-lock to the left and then full-lock to the right.

Fastest way to rip the steering track off, try doing it on a gravel surface to reduce the stresses.

i had this prob and turned out to be the steering angle sensor.
i suppose multiple factors bring this light up. the first thing to do is hook up diagnostics and read the fault code.
in my case it started coming up very infrequently, then over time it started liking me a bit too much, then i got sick of it >:D
hooked up the scanner and that showed a steering angle sensor fault.
usually this should have been correctable with a re-calibration. that didn't work so i had to get it replaced.
when the light comes up the transfer box goes into fail-safe mode and u don't have 4x4 any more.
