Need a 227 style rear wheel 20"

Post by Chief1409 » Sun Sep 23, 2012 8:37 am

Got car back from garage yesterday after a brake fluid change and the OBD security update only to be told the rear offside wheel is cracked and needs replaced. Quoted £750 inc. VAT!!! Only got the AUC car in May so bit annoyed it needs this - never had to replace a wheel on any car never mind one so young.

Any suggestions for where I can get one cheaper?

Ebay? Or perhaps on a car so young a letter\phone call to bmw for some goodwill discount\freebe? Got to be worth a shot, know there's quite a lot of bmw breakers but none seem to have anything x5 related of any age x series

[/quote]Nothing on eBay except a place called BMW Direct which is charging £725 plus postage.

Think I'll go down the letter to BMW route as we only bought the AUC car in May.

A long shot here and I'm sure I know the answer already but can you repair cracks in alloys?

BMW test cracked wheels for 'run-out' at the rim to see if the wheel has been subjected to in their terms 'excessive force' aka a pothole.  If the inner and outer rim distance apart varies by more that a certain amount then they'll go down the 'pothole so not covered by warranty' route.  If the run-out is within tolerances then you have a much better case and BMW have paid for replacements whilst not accepting any liability!

There were issues with cracked M-Sport wheels in the past (Watchdog covered it in 2009) and BMW did pay up under certain circumstances.  One of the problems with RFTs is that they transmit much more shock load into the rims, and that can cause cracking - but BMW will play hardball about the run-out test unless you have a sympathetic dealer.

BMW Direct is BMWs official eBay store.

Initial line i was given by the dealer was the crack wouldn't be covered as its an AUC warranty and not a new car warranty. Car is only 3.5 years old.

As for the crack, I haven't actually seen it yet - not obvious whilst wheel is on so don't even know where it is. Will get my finger out this weekend and try and get more details from the technician who noticed it and then try and sweet talk the dealer. Or failing that go down the BMW letter route.

Been too busy this week as selling our house....
