We bought our Black Labrador Retriever puppy at the beginning of the year, after months if not years of deliberation to be best prepared to facilitate needs of dog & our family.

1st dog we have had for quiet a few years, a significant time, emotional & financial comitment, (thousands in a lifetime).

No regrets here. Our puppy, (now 8 months), is a well loved & cared for. Hard work at times but that hard work now paying off though not perfect in every situation every time.  He is a very positive, (sometimes time consuming), part of all our lives. None of us would want to be without him.....we all love him so much.

Our pup is very well dog socialised, (daily), & simply loves making new friends with other dogs. Majority of Jack Russels I've seen out & about seem a little bit snappy but I have met good tempered ones too. In truth & regadless of breed a lot comes down to training & socialisation, (owners are a major factor in this).

If pup/breeder checks all good & purchase made when seriously committed then I sincerely wish you the very best of luck  :)

Cheers and thank you, we already have another pooch a Shitzu who has an ace temperament, he's a bit unsure of her at the moment, we have already started crate training, she's in there now and seems quite at home with it, for an 8 week old puppy, she's surprisingly calm and well behaved, so watch this space :)

it is all about the owners with dogs, some of the nicest dogs i know are breeds we all go hmmmm at and some of the worst i know are traditional nice ones, i dont have one but my mum sort of inherited a staffy and though she looks mean shes the nicest tempered always wanting fuss dog ive ever met, unlike when you see the chavs with a pram in one hand and a staffy in the other on their way to collect their giro (not that im generising)

Glad all seems well at moment :)

Ironically 3 of 4 dogs that barked/snapped at mine today were Jack Russsels that ran/lunged towards mine without any apparent visible provocation I could see............. My pup is currently still entire so that may be a factor.  The 4th dog was another Labrador, ( known to mine),  & in response to to mine mounting. He's a bit of a sex pest occasionally - we work to keep this in check but also want him to physically develop more before we say bye bye to his undercarriage.

I am not a dog expert but from experiences I have had I would make sure I thoroughly socialised with multi & larger breeds if I had a JR. There is a lovely JR that lives nearby & which has obviously been very well socialised with a variety of other dogs as he is always friendly & never aggressive from what I have seen. He is a credit to himself & his owner/family.

Keep us posted & including well after the honeymoon period.

I call it small dog complex......Jack Russells do often seem to be the main culprits and occasionally try and have a go at my 2 labs.

But as other people have said it really has more to do with the socializing when they are puppies and the fact that regardless of how placid all breeds can be they can all turn occasionally.

Tonight a golden retriever turned on my Lad Pup.........owner very apolgetic & checked their dog (1 of a pair of GR's playing together & owned by same couple).

As prior mentioned my pup is 8 months old, immature & still "entire".  Dogs sense the entirety & some respond/react. Others are simply intolerant of a lab who occasionally goes in a bit over friendly & over familiar during some meets/greets.........other times he is spot on & typically when more reserved initially. Others are quite simply & very obviously poorly socialised/handled.

Lead & handler control of my dog's meet/greet sessions can help but then there can be resultant owner anxiety by some , ( not to mention tangled leads), as dogs pull on leads & owners pull back.......This can sometimes cause dogs posture(s) to be changed by owners at critical time(s) which can unintentionally send wrong "dog to dog" body signals which can on rare occasion cause an unwanted dog conflict.

I never realised quite how complex all this dog behaviour stuff was until I started researching it. It's good to be aware of dog behaviour and body language but it can make walks less relaxing than perhaps those enjoyed by oblivious others.

We have near neighbours with schnauzers, both male and 'intact'.  One (the slightly older) is good as gold but the younger one is noisy, aggressive, growls at the fence all the time and barks endlessly at the slightest noise.

Odd how one can be at such odds temperant wise the other even in the same home environment.

The older one I would trust, but the other one no chance!  There's never been an issue, and with me having worked around both Police and Military 'Land Sharks' as the German Shepherd is known, I have no fear of dogs.  Some do seem to need just that little bit more awareness though......even the most gentle and usually good natured ones.. :)
