Insurance renewal time - joke quotes/excesses

Insurance is up for renewal on X5 in September

Renewal quote with Admiral £750 which includes declaring remap.

Done the on line comparison site and a couple of un-knowns are cheaper but prefer to keep with well known company.

Tried Direct Line, quote was £800 so a no straight away. What made me fall off my chair was the £950 excess for me and £850 for the Mrs !?!?

I wonder if this is a result of the number of BMW thefts recently?

Any other people you think I should try?

Tbh last year to keep the quote down I had to up the excess to £950. I worked on the basis that anything minor I'd repair myself anyway and if it were a third party then doesn't apply.

This year I'm back down to a slightly more reasonable £380 excess with Admiral and renewal price of £720 including guaranteed hire car and that's with my mods declared too.

Strangely enough I've always found admiral to be amongst the cheapest, especially when you have one of their multi-car policies,it seems the more cars you have, and the more people you insure on them, ( as long as they are not spotty teenagers ), then the better discount you get.
As an example, I've just bought a 2003 vectra Sri as a runaround whilst I'm selling my X5, and to add it to the insurance policy for the remainder of the term has cost me 55 quid for 5 months.

So you would be a little upset with my £380 fully comp with £150 excess then????

We used to use Admiral, but when we took the E46 off the road and SORN'd it, they cancelled the insurance (they refused to provide any kind of cover for it) and whacked up the rest of the policy costs.  Their phone drone even told me that 'no one offers lay up insurance in the UK'.  Odd then that Adrian Flux covered it less than 15 minutes later..... >:(

We have now removed all cars from Admiral, put separate policies in place again and saved about £300 across the fleet.

I'm not saying they don't offer a good system - but then so do others now - but it's not one everyone can use.

My beef is with direct line and the excesses.

I will stay with admiral for now but I'm a bit concerned that they won't like my new car....

Totally agree, and when renewal time comes around I will be surfing away like a teenager when his parents are out.

We stopped using Admiral multicar a few years back as the quotes suddenly rocketed. Swiftcover have been by far the cheapest since.

Just had my renewal quote too £1085, complete joke so got on the interweb and got it down to £498 with Axa through Compare the Market and that's with £250 excess so a no-brainer really, simples !

Trouble is, with most ins companies, they heavily discount for new customers and then just assume you will automatically renew, don't forget most companies have your details and just renew unless you tell them otherwise.
Always worth a call to see if they can match, or even better, another quote.

I have certainly played that game with mine over the years.  Get a new quote on line without a registration number and when it comes in cheaper than the renewal phone then and change things over.

Someone I knew in the industry told me a few years back that the quotes are also influenced by time of day, day of the month and date in the current financial quarter/year.  Try the same details on different days and the figures can vary widely - by a few hundred pounds sometimes.  It makes a mockery of the whole business.

When I first insured the X5 back in 2005, the insurer had not even updated their tables to show the new engine size, gearbox type or output bhp (from 2987cc, 5-speed, 186bhp to 2993cc, 6-speed and 218bhp) - and that was getting on for two years after the facelift was available.

No wonder people get hacked off with insurers!!

Definitely always worth trying to barter with them even more. Admiral's renewal was was more expensive than their child companies of Bell, etc but I still got Admiral to match Bell and throw in the extra guaranteed courtesy car.
