Hi everyone - New E70 owner here

Post by leosayer » Tue Jul 31, 2012 6:55 pm

Hi everyone,

I'm almost a carbon copy of the new owner in this thread:
http://xdrivers.co.uk/forum/https://xdr ... ic.php?t=2

My family have also come from an A6 and we have spent months trying all sorts of cars from Tiguan, XC60, Q5, Freelander, X3 through to larger things like the RRS and Touareg.

We settled on the X5 because it seemed to have the best interior space, superb seats and driving position and probably the best combination of engine, gearbox, refinement and fuel economy. My wife was quite anti-BMW and hated the split-tailgate, but I talked her round to my way of thinking.

We've got a 2010 Platinum Grey X5 in 'bottom of the range' spec ie. with standard suspension and the lesser spotted 18" wheels. It came with electric memory sport seats and media pack so it isn't completely bereft! The standard suspension was a must for me and they are surprisingly hard to find. I'm also not a fan of larger alloys so the M-Sports were out of the question.

So far, I'm very happy. The X5 feels as fast as my old A6 petrol 2.7TT which is quite some achievement given that the X5 has 5bhp less and weighs 300kg more. On first impression it seems much more fun on twisty country lanes which defies all logic. The X5 is getting more than 30mpg which much more than the Audi. to top it all off, the ride is smoother as well.

I'm very impressed.

The only thing that bugs me so far is the iDrive, which I'm slowly learning. It's fun trying though. I managed to set up the 3 flash indicator thing and the autolock when pulling away, so I'm getting there.

The first thing I'm planning to do is get some 19" wheels and put winter tyres on the 18"s. I've still not decided on the RFT v Non-RFT debate yet but I may well invest in a spare wheel. It feels strange not to have one.

Anyway, here's a pic:

Hello and welcome......very nice.

The debate on RFT/non-RFT will run and run.  I've got used to it now, and it's not too harsh a ride on the 18"/19" wheels.  20"/21" are the worst.

Welcome aboard and nice purchase. Like the colour a lot.

But I love big wheels so for me even 19's are too small for such a big vehicle, but that's just me... :)

For a more basic model, it certainly looks great and i too am loving that colour.

I must agree with Raj though, bigger wheels are needed, at least 20's but NRF, but that's just my opinion.....

By the way, welcome.

Even on RFT's I'm guessing the ride must actually be quite good on 18's.
