Annual Insurance Renewal - Best Companies to try??

Post by shy7g » Mon Jul 23, 2012 3:17 pm

Hi everyone
it's that time of year for me to start looking to renew my insurance policy again,(and for the very first time for annual renewal with the X5 E53). I had to top up on the last policy having purchased the vehicle in June but now, my current insurers don't want to cover this vehicle so put the renewal at a stupid price of £1345.20. Come on it's not if I'm 21 again, but just over twice that @ 44, with 12-years NCB.

  1. Could anyone also tell me what the standard alarm and immobiliser units are on the X5 E53 4.6is, 52-plate 2002, Auto, are and if any of the units have insurance classifications, e.g. Cat1, Cat2, etc, etc...?
  2. Recommend an insurer for best cover and price?
  3. Has anyone found it cheaper to insure the X5 under there wife's name or similar?
All assistance greatly appreciated, so a big thanks up front.. :)

That's a lot of dosh, but it will depend on your location etc, history and all the other odd things brokers seem to want to take into account but which have little 'real world' meaning!  I mean who cares if you're left handed etc >:(

At the time of build I believe the X5 had a Thatcham Class 1 approved Alarm/Immobiliser for the UK market and they were fitted in the factory.  Tracking devices were an optional extra with the BMW OEM offering at that time being from 'Tracker'.  You could of course fit your own though.

I'm paying about half what you are but with a large excess - something I will be reviewing at next renewal.

It used to make a difference if the car was insured in my wife's name but I think the new rules have stopped that to a large extent, and the cover should always be in the name of the main driver, or the main driver detailed on the policy.  Like all these dodges that have been tried (for all the right reasons) they're a great idea until something goes wrong...... ;)

im 26 4 yrs ncb with 0points.

im with elephant and i pay all in one go. it was £950 for me.

i was involved in an accident april 2011 where i was hit by a car driving on the wrong side of the road. i didnt claim on it because the car was worthless and i didnt want to take the financial hit.
they called me last month saying that they had been made aware of this and that i had to pay an additional £450 as statistically i am more likely to have an accident now!

rip off merchants but still cheap if you can pay it in one go.

Admiral and Elephant are the same company and give the huge discount if pay it immediately, i paid it with an interest free credit cared and spread the payments over 10 months.

worth a look... so long as you dont ever have an accident!

Thought mine was bad at £850 fully comp.  34yrs old, 8yrs NCB.  Windscreen claim April just gone. And that's a 3.0d!!!
No wonder so many drive without insurance.  Prices are getting daft

Hi thanks for your input
On most insurance web sites these days you can take out the policy in wife's name as the main policy holder, but then specify that the you (additional driver) are the reg. keeper and main driver, this doesn't effect anything if needing to make a claim. Somewhere in the last 15-yrs we swapped over somehow and now I'm insuring the wife's car and she insures mine, crazy  :crazy1: - yes, but more hassle than it's worth to change them both over.
Thanks for clarifying the security devices fitted and their category status.
THIS IS WHAT I'VE GOT TO
The wife and I both early 40's (so she won't kill me :)) :)))
Vehicle X5 E53, 4.6is (that doesn't help) 52-plate, with tracker retrieve
Claims - x2 in past year (all down to others bumping the wifes C1) OUCH :bangin:
NCB - 12-yrs protected
BEST PRICE SO FAR - £617.59 mark paying monthly WITH L.V. hopefully I can get down from that
will keep you all posted

That's at least better.  The only way (so far) I have found of getting my premium down was to accept an £850 excess (mine plus their mandatory one). 51, nil points, one no-fault (3rd party paid all costs) claim.  My premium is around £590.

Insurance is getting silly, but then when you look at main Dealer prices for parts & labour and then stick 20% vat on and their 'it's an insurance claim' fringe bonus on, I'm not surprised.  Some newly qualified drivers are getting really mad quotes - so they don't bother - and that whacks it on the rest of us but the insurance industry doesn't seem to get that bit.  Add ambulance chaser legal claims and rigged crashes and false whiplash claims and...... >:( >:( >:(

I've just insured my wife's 3.0d with Sky Insurance who provided cover through Chaucer.  A couple of accidents to declare between us and 3 points on her licence gave a premium of £500 with £350 total excess and 90 days European cover.  They gave a discount for being a member of M3torque but they would probably be keen to get something going on here as well.  They advertise as being mod friendly as well so even better if you're considering a remap.

I've just renewed mine on Thursday.

I'm 38, with 3 points and 2 claims in the last 3 years (1 was third party paid and they kindly informed my insurance company...t*ssers).

Mods declared with Admiral for £713. £120 of that because of the third party claim because an idiot van driver left his handbrake off.... >:(

Annual Insurance Renewal - Best Companies to try??

Direct line always seem to get me best quotes. 4.4, 39 years, full ncd, 350xs, £365 fully comp 10k miles. I do have a tracker though. Paid lifetime SmarTrack £600 4 years ago as planning to keep a long time so cheapest way to get tracker discount.

I am with Admiral multi Car and I pay £397 for my X5. I have a small excess which I think is around £350.

My wife Mini Cooper and my 21 year old son Ford Focus are on the same insurance. Not sure whether it makes a difference.
Fair enough I am kinda ancient compared to some of you guys and with 15 years + no claim but no claim is usually capped anyhow.
