I managed to put these photos on, pressed post instead of preview.
The car needs a good clean out, and a wash, I was only going to post the faded stereing wheel picture but got carried away

Why is the MID in the glove box? I thought when you bought aftermarket HUs that they did all that was required and the mid was rendered obsolete?

The headunit is a Dynavin E39A from the Dynavin store, ( via Ebay £689 )
this is the windows version, android units are available.
If you dont have OEM sat nav it is a stand alone unit, if you are replacing your OEM sat nav/ media pack you need another cable to reach the radio unit in the boot.
not that easy tro fit, I had to chop out  the original rradio/cd mid carrier unit behind the dash and drill and bolt in a supplied bracket, so not a diy job for the faint hearted .
there is a list of installers on their site if you want it fitted locally.

In answer to the steering wheel question its the standard 3.0 diesel sport 3 spoke steering wheel,( facelift ) mine has a worn centre plastic trim, got a new one from BMW on the way

In answer to the question about why is the mid in the glove box ?

The dynavin headunit has a screen that displays the information from the MID OBC.
But there is no way of reseting the consumption 1 + 2, or the time and date in the binnacle display, between the speedo and rev counter. so I extended the 5 wire harness from behind the dash into the glove box, reconnected the mid, so I can reset these settings once in a while, I plan to run the cable to the boot area in the near future and use one of the side cubby holes to reclaim the glove box.
Hope that all makes sense.?

Is this MID thing a quirk unique to using a Dynavin as I've seen a Hualigan (spelling) used as an alternative to OE?

As you don't lookat it any more...fancy a straght swap for a slightly pixelated one  ::)

Or even a roof mount into a home built binnacle perhaps............then everyone can see the data?

That may not be such a great idea if he is only getting low mpg and trying not to let SWMBO know - oh no, that's just me...... :-X

Sanj, this is EXACTLY what I'll be looking to do when I find the X I want... obviously this headunit wouldn't work with a car that came with DSP?
So in your opinion it's better to find a poverty spec (audio wise/non nav) x5 to utilise one of these headunits the easiest?! how are the standard speakers in a 2005/6 compared to the facelift 5 series...because they were shite! lol
How is the glare from the sun? the angle seems very high?
and finally - also where did you put your GPS antenna?

oh ps...
