Diesel smell

Post by pvr » Mon Jul 09, 2012 9:32 pm

Never had this in the E53, but I smell the diesel a lot in the car when stationary (sickly sweet smell).

Also, when the car is in the garage and I walk in there, it still smells.

Anyone else had this on the 40d?

Not noticed it on the X6 at all.  Any sign of fuel drips?  All I can think of is whether there's a problem with the tank venting at all, or whether the Fuel Cap locking down OK?

Is it worse in the back of the car - in case there's a breather incorrectly fitted etc?  Have there been any fuel spills when filling?  There's a drain line that runs down from the filler point and given diesel takes a long time to evaporate just wondering if there's a bit around the filler at all?

No spillage and has been like it from day one. Smell comes through the front vents when in the car and smells from the front when in the garage.  Smells seems to come from the front of the car.

Back to the Dealer then......could be a very small leak in an injector, fuel line, pump, joint.......need to get the covers off top and bottom and explore.....annoying, and not a particularly pleasant smell!

I have had this in my 5 Series. It was the small line that runs to / from the fuel filter by the engine - it had a very small split on it so replaced it and all was fine.

It doesn't take much diesel to make a smell so it could be something as simple as that?

I will update when I get the car to the dealer. Will have it do an oil change as well as the car has done 1500 miles now.
