Newbie alert!

Post by 4687ah » Thu Jun 21, 2012 8:38 pm

Hi, its official, i am now a newbie!
Bought my first X5 about 5 weeks ago, and everything crossed, its all going fine so far.
This is only my second BMW with first being a 52 reg 320d sport touring in silver which we had a few years ago.
That car was chosen by the wife and although she had to talk me into it (as we left the sellers and set off home before i was persuaded to go back) over time it grew on me and has been the only car to date that i didn't modify in any way, now thats a ringing endorsement!
Anyway, always fancied a 5series sport after that, but as the kids school is off the beaten track and as wife drives the car during the week we were never fully comfortable with the RWD thing (blame the 3months winter ownership of an RX8 for that). So after many nights disagreeing over-i mean looking at-every make and model under the sun, we settled on an X.
Got it through the BMW Approved scheme at a price i was happy with, and i am honestly well happy with it, its condition and its spec.
Its been a while since i was genuinely enthusiastic about the family car.
I have never joined a forum before, but was in the RSOC as i had an Escort rs1600i for 14 years- sadly sold two years ago.
The reason i joined here was down to the excellent set of instructions i found on here about changing the  crankcase breather, which i used to guide me through the job, so many thanks for that one.
I am hoping my cars spec will be shown in my sig, but please dont ask for pics as i have one on my iphone but at two hours and counting, i am still unable to get it on the site either as a pic or a profile pic, so am a beaten man.
I do have a few questions which you boys will no doubt be able to answer, but i will save them for a rainy day-lol!

No pics no answers eh, now thats the kind of attitude i like!
As it stands at the moment i cant decide which i would rather try- the photos thing or changing the air filter on the 3.0d again(i think our German freinds were having a laugh with that one)- i will get off the phone and fire up the laptop this weekend for another round of head scratching and see if i can triumph with the pics.
Maybe i just need a bit of a PMA.

Ok, here we go. I think i am right In thinking that all 3.0d come the webasto as standard to warm the engine when below 5degrees. Now i am wondering if i can buy the kit for sale on ebay for approx £150 and simply wire this in to allow remote heating? I am guessing that i will need to get the obc adjusted in some way also as it only shows aux vent, if this is true, how do you go about getting the obc adjusted?
I am asking as It sounds suspiciously straightforward, therefore possibly not right.
Thanks for your help.

Question 1.....Answer yes, warms the coolant loop.

Question 2.....Here's a 30 page thread on how to enable remote heating........nice bit of bedtime reading for you..... :))

It's almost suspiciously straightforward, but there are several ways to do it, some for a lot less money....and you are thinking of a Telestart.

Welcome aboard.

Another prior RX-8 owner here...............Still miss mine despite it's odd pitfalls.

Also a big fan of RS 1600i. yet another car I wish I had owned even way back in 1983 - I remember seeing one for 1st time at RS dealer. The less obvious choice compareed to say the S1 RS Turbo & my favourite available Escort. Values never really suffered for clean ones. The RS1600i & RS2000 back in the day always liked. Had a few Fords couple of XR2's & a 2.9i 4x4 Sierra.

Maybe later post a pic or 2 of the RS1600i /RX-8 on another thread if so motivated.
