Speakers??

Hi, I have a 2008 E70 with the standard speaker package I believe and the passenger one has blown/not working!

I might aswell replace both of these, but can anyone give any advice on any decent brands to look out for?? Also I think I might be right in saying that my car doesn't run tweeters, they are empty and only used when you opt for the upgrade? Can I add these too??

Cheers for your help!

SANJ!!  RAJ!!  JEEG!!
You three know heaps about the audio systems.  The answer is probably yes you can in terms of adding.  Is the wiring there?

Have a look on Realoem site to check the Audio, Navigation, Electronic systems page against your car (use the last 7 of the VIN in the Serial Number box and that will find the right version, then 'Pictures Drill Down' to make things easier to find.  It looks like the tweeter comes with a pigtail on it so just plugs in.

Speakers I will leave to those that have done it.

Tbh - no idea in an E70. Not until I get one and rip it to pieces!

Good makes:

JL Audio
JBL
Infinity
Focal

Check the size you can fit and then by components (that the mids and the tweeters as a complete package with the crossover).

Will sound much better if you don't have tweeters right now for sure.

Matched pairs for each door would be required as there doesn't appear to be a crossover on the standard speaker according Realoem.

The 'standard' amp is rated to 200W so it might need a bit of help with more drivers to feed.  The HiFi amp is 600W to cope (speakers all over the place.. ). Depends upon how loud you want it...... O0

Ok, cheers.

Any 4" speakers I have found, no matter what brand, obviously have different screw hole locators so what happens there then? OEM BMW has three screw holes in a triangle pattern where as all aftermarket ones are normally 4 in each corner?

Also Ive read that I probably won't have a centre speaker either?? Can I just pop the mesh cover off to have a look???

The E70 standard system setup is a 4" speaker in the bottom of the door. Although it is only a 4" speaker currently you can fit 5.25" in there. Reason being is that the actual aperture is large enough but the stock speaker is housed in a rather large plastic surround. There are sometimes aftermarket adapter rings that can be purchased to switch from the stock 3 point mounting to normal 4. If not available you can make up some yourself quite easy out of MDF. Something like Focal 5.25 slimline's which are a 2 way component set up. This will then give you the tweeter to mount into the OE location also. You will get a separate crossover that will need to be mounted out the way (and ideally behind the doorcard) as this will split your standard input speaker signal into the separate ones required for your mid and tweeter.

This will be provide a huge improvement over the stock single speaker even if only driven by the standard headunit/amp.

You won't be able to just drop the centre speaker in if not already there as the signal will not be there and will be harder to wire in off the stock setup (if at all).

Raj, I didn't want to question your reply :( , but everywhere I read it only states you can fit 4" mids into E70 doors? Have you seen 5.25" done, its just I want everything ready before I start ripping the door cards off.

Thanks!

Sorry for the lack of response, but Kav has answered and tbh it was his E70 that is why I knew they fit.

I too have the standard sound system in my E70.

5.25 speakers, which brand? Have you any pictures you can show us raj?

What kind of speaker can go in the center part?

Finally, I'm thinking mini sub under one of the seats just to give a bit of umpfh! Can I run this off the existing head unit?

Ta!

I know this is an old post, but I'm hoping that you guys are still around since I'm a newbie to the audio side of things...

I've just bought Focal 100KRS an a speaker upgrade for my e70, I have everything in place to mount them correctly but I'm looking for a little advice; do I need to feed new wires from the amp to new speakers I'm fitting or can I use the old speakers wires? If I can used the original ones, which connnections go where? I can get access to equipment to change the connections from the current connectors to the spade type required for the Focals.

Sorry if this seems basic stuff to you guys, only this is new to me...

I've never seen a need yet to replace speaker wires as long as they are not damaged. A more powerful amp might need a heavier 12v power wire to it though. For a 100w amp I'd go with 12awg wire.  Yeah, it may be overkill, but that's just me.

Greats for you input!

There are two wires going to two connectors though, any idea which I should use? It seems there are four connections to the current speakers?!

Somebody who's done it on your car should confirm, but I can answer on general experience:

It sounds like your original speakers have two speaker circuits in one housing, hence four wires. If your new speakers only require two wires, then you can double up the wires to the new speakers.  Use a DMM (digital multi-meter) to determine which wire is which at both ends, then use two wires joined together (ideally also observing correct colour coding) for each single connection on the new speakers.  This will have the side benefit of your new speakers having double the copper connecting them to the amp.

I'm assuming for this discussion that your new 100w amp is only wired for two wires to each speaker.
