Webasto Confusion....Help Please....

Hi all,
The webasto on my 56 plate 3.0D comes on every time i open the car even at this time of year, I went to my local BMW indy and he disconnected it and said it that there is no need to have it, I only need it if I want pre-heat in winter to avoid having to get the de-icer out. So i figured I wouldnt bother as it could be costly just to save having to defrost the car.

However, after some reading on this forum, Im now thinking that it is needed in the winter to help start the engine on diesels? There fore I need it fixing before colder weather comes?

I dont have a remote for the webasto or anything and cant see any option to programme it in the car.

I guess wnat Im trying to establish is do I need to get this fixed for the car to start properly in the winter or is it just a luxury to avoid having to defrost yourself, in which case ill just leave it disconnected and save a few quid?

All help and advice much appreciated.

its worth a look at getting it working, you will no doubt  have to get it enabled on the OBC with a scanner,
where do you live as you could borrow mine if your local to me ,  :)

You don't need it to start the car in Winter (glow plugs cover that part), but it does help warm the car and engine up faster as it heats the coolant circuit.

Your Dealer is right that it's not essential but it's still a good thing to have.  The current generation of E70/71 have it as an expensive cost option now.  Having a warm car more quickly is always cozy on a freezing day.. :cold:

Is there any sign of a Webasto module in the boot, or additional heating functions (Aux heating) on your nav display?  Just wondering if the system has been modded at all?  You might have a Telestart unit and the fob has gone missing for example.

Im in Leicestershire, there is nothing in the boot, just the webasto module under the bonnet.
On the computer it has aux. ventilation which when selected gives you the option of timer 1 and timer 2. Nothing else that I can see though.
Other than that I just have 2 normal BMW key remotes, no webasto remote.
If its gonna cost £100s to get working Ill just make do without as I have heated seats and heated steering wheel, if however it can be sorted for upto £100 id be interested to get it sorted?

Sounds like a standard install from the build point of view, and no 'coding changes'. Dunno why it's triggering.  BMW will probably want £100 just to talk to you.  These units are the sort of things that get put in caravans, trucks and narrow boats etc, so it may be worth having a look for a Webasto agent locally.  I think the heater unit is called a 'Thermo Top' or similar - the name is on the label on the side of the unit.

Had this problem with mine and read up that the control modules on top can fail which means that it purges every time you open the car.

I ended up getting a new one off ebay for £199 and just fitting that then made a remote control for £30 to turn it on and off remotely.......(there are instructions for this somewhere on the forum) before buying the proper webasto kit for £99

It is the Thermo Top C or Z heater.  As said they are often fitted to boats to heat water for HW or Central heating

Did you buy a whole new unit of ebay or just the control module?
