Hello there

Post by fatladandy » Mon Jun 11, 2012 6:58 pm

Hi Guys,

Thought i would say a quick hi. I will be spending a bit of time on her come the end of the month having just bought 2002 4.4i sport x5. once i pick it i will post up some pics.

We aren't new to BMW's I have had an e21 320, an e30 325i sport, an e36 323i coupe track car and currently drive an e34 525i. The wife who's car this actually will be has previously had an e36 316i coupe and a 530d touring which is what the X5 is replacing. I am looking to add an e46 M3 the family later in the year.

Anyway thats enough jabbering for now.

Andy

it is indeed a decent spec, I like the 2 tone leather myself. we have looked at a few since we sold the almost dead 530d, tried a couple of 3.0i's and thought they were ok but nothing special, liked the 4.4i and 4.6is but the wife prefered all the 4.4i that we tried. the 4.6is is laugh out loud fast but i felt the 4.4i was the best balanced all rounder

i wont get to spend much time in it as the wife will be using it as the family wagon, I have to make do with my e34 until the e46 m3 comes later in the year. Having said that though all wifey has talked about since yesterday morning is the x5, so i rung up and bought it when i got home from work. I have to say during the time we have been looking at x5's i have been utterly shocked by the amount of crap out there. This one was definately the best one we had seen and it was the 12th we had viewed over the last few weeks.

A local "bmw specialist" had an x plate 3.0i se in with 150k on the clock for 5.5k and it looked like there had been a riot in it, speaker grilles were smashed, paint all over the centre console and the rear wiper had been ripped off. The guy was genuinely shocked when I asked him if he was taking the piss.

We looked at a 53 plate 4.6is on Saturday, it looked good in the pics rolled up at the dealers on saturday and taking into account we had rung 4 hours earlier to say we were coming. It was filthy, the tyres were flat, as was the battery. The self levelling suspension pump was knackered and he thought the first to see it would buy. I dont think so.

Sounds like you did the right thing and took your time.  As you say there are some absolute howlers out there that Dealers think are 'immaculate' and want top money for.  The market is awash with X5's now and buyers are getting more and more careful - as they need to be with any car but even more so when repair bills can be  :yikes: :crazy1:

Welcome aboard. 4.4 is well balanced and you did the right thing by viewing a few to make the decision.

thats why I havent even looked at 3.0d x5's. The wife had a 530d until a couple of months ago, until it decided to drop a pair of injectors, promptly followed by the turbo letting go, bizarrly on the way to the garage to have the injectors looked at. but for what it would have cost to repair I just stuck it on the mighty ebay and still pulled in 1200 quid which i thought was good for a knackered w reg 530d se touring with 195k on the clock.

I really liked the 530d when it was working but when is wasnt it hurt the wallet

The X5 is much the same. Great when working but can be very costly when not.

Looks a nice X

It took me 3 months looking to fine one I wanted. As you say there is a lot of rubbish out there. I see you went for a V8, I did as well as I found that genrally these we looked after better than the Dervs I looked at and had a lot less mileage on them.

I hope all goes well, at least it will make you smile every time you start it up 8)
