The new car has the service package which includes oil as and when but I always like to have some in the garage.
What type do I buy?

I have a full set of Castrol Edge (16 litres) as I will be doing an interim service, even though I have the inclusive package as well. It is the 5W-30.

Is that the oil supplied from new or your choice?

If the oil is the same in the E70 as the E53 (5w30) then there is an offer posted by Jig
here.

I bought the whole set from Opie when they had a deal on. I have just done 1200 miles in my X5 so am planning to get the change done soonish.

Does it need to be serviced at 1200 miles?

Officially not, but I can't understand this 15k miles on oil that has been used to run the car in.
Why run the car in otherwise?
