Here we go......more taxes
Here we go......more taxes
It seems that the Treasury has suddenly woken up to the fact that newer cars are cleaner and as their emissions fall so does the Government's tax take from VED.......so an investigation on the future of VED is underway. Anyone else think this isn't going to go in drivers favour? People switch to cleaner cars to save money (I'm not one who subscribes to them doing it for the Planet) and then get jumped on again. Same as the big drive to 'Go Diesel' in the 1980's and early 1990's - which those that did then got clobbered for doing.

It's stories like this that prove the distribution of VED is based b@llsh!t
What about cola bubbles excise duty...that's co2
up next...switch to LPG....then LPG prices through the roof
tyre width tax
weight tax
just stick it on fuel and have done with it....but that's harder to calculate returns isn't it mr exchequer....but at least its proprtional and not based on patronised cr@p

Adding to fuel seems the fairest way in my books - use more fuel, pay more taxes

Could be good for my X as it does less than 100 miles a week most of the time.
But it is only £270 to Tax and the rate it can use fuel at it might cost more.

Re: Here we go......more taxes
Probem is there needs to be a fair way of taxing rather than simply taking money from the pockets of perceived 'rich' folk.
I only drive 6000 miles per annum in my Porsche but pay the highest duty - it's not harming the environment anywhere near as much as a sales rep in a vectra travelling 35000 per annum.

Re: Here we go......more taxes
I am of the opinion that VED and basic third party insurance should be added to fuel prices. As said above, the more miles, the more pollution, also the more damage to the roads etc so the correlation between mileage and fuel use would be more in line.
With the insurance, you would only have to pay additional charges to increase your level of cover as you wished, thus getting away from those annoying uninsured drivers.
Whilst on this type of subject (sure this has been asked before but what the hey), do you think the MOT should be age and mileage dependant? If you only use your car for 5k pa, will the wear and tear really be in line with that of someone doing 30k pa after 3 years? So contentious issue I'm sure, but what do people think?

Totally agree with that often low milage cars can be more trouble than a high milage well serviced car, also low milage have been stood so open to very corroded parts

I agree, which is why I thought they should be time and mileage dependant, so either 3 years or say 60k, then annually or 20k since last MOT?
Just a thought.

Re: Here we go......more taxes
I think they will change the tax for older cars and anything 73 onwards will go up.
However, I am now thinking about a classic car poss an old rover pre 73, with no road tax and I have read from November cars made before 1960 will not need an MOT what a result, so you can have an old car untested and free tax and emit lots of CO2.
Makes me think there is poss an X5 for sale with high road tax needs an annual mot and lots of CO2
