Hi Guys,
Just been having a late night sort at home and i'm scared by how much old paperwork i've acquired over the years.
How long do you tend to keep the below for and when/if you throw them out?
House insurance polices
Bank Statements
Old closed loans
wage slips
council tax bills
old mortgages from diff lenders and previous properties etc this is a bulky file
I want to have good ole sort but not sure how long I should be holding onto it all for
Thanks

House insurance polices (as soon as the new one comes)
Bank Statements (never you can get them from the bank year's back down the line if needed)
Old closed loans (if closed then meaningless)
wage slips (as soon as the new tax year starts I bag all slips, then bin on yr2)
council tax bills (yearly)
old mortgages from diff lenders and previous properties (old should mean no need to keep)

If any of your loans had PPI on them then hang on to those. Remember you can make a claim at present, but don't use the heavily advertised services of one of those 'recovery' firms (most of whom remove 25% for their services). You can claim for yourself free. One form, one stamp and bingo, unless the Bank/Loan Co. plays sill buggers in which case it goes in another letter with form to the Financial Ombudsman Service - for free..
If not then as scooby says - bin em (but
always shred them beforehand!)

I shred everything, that way there is no chance of anybody getting my details easily.

Did 20 years of car insurance policies recently, it actually broke my shredder.
The 20 years of bank statements went into the fire. I keep everything for 7 years (i.e. I have to keep it because of the IR).

Absolutely........
And I find it therapeutic too......until the blasted thing jams!!
@pvr...I use the 7 year rule too for financial stuff. Everything else goes.

So it's your fault that Gatwick was closed overnight due to poor visibility then.....
