How can u stall the x5

Bad news, just driving the wife and kids to coventry and had a scary moment when it seemed like the car wanted to accelerate, smoke at the rear. Managed to calm it down and pulled in to services which luckily was coming up. I think the turbos on its way out, I had oil light flicker but oil level in the engine is ok. Got a bit a clavier sound as well, I decided to drive it slowly to destination which was one junction, but kept the revs low. Question is how can I stall it ? . Think I should get it recovered.

If it starts running on engine oil through the turbo, the only way is to block the inlet tract.

With manuals its of course simpler- put it in high gear and let it stall.

My advice would be to switch it off immediately and get it recovered, becuase if it does run on it will carry on until the engine siezes due to lack of oil. Huge bill and big headache!

Thanks black x5, got it recovered on a flat bed (Rac), will look at it on Monday. If I remember did your turbo go too how did u get on with a recon unit, new garetts are just shy of 1000, rebuilds from about 350. I've changed my crankcase ventilation less than 20k as well, bit gutted but have to fix and keep

If this was to happen would the easiest and quickest way to kil the engine be to nip the fuel line under the bonnet?

The problem is that the turbo is burning engine oil and what isn't burned in the turbo goes into the engine and 'diesels' in the cylinders allowing the engine to accelerate without any control. The turbo effectively becomes a single stage gas turbine engine. As it is burning the oil, cutting the diesel fuel off won't help in these cases as the engine oil is the fuel... :o

The only real way to stop the engine itself is to block the air inlets (at the top of the radiator) with damp towels and hope it stops!

Just a quick update after my scary moment. Turns out the turbo was ok took it off looked like there was a bit of play but when I gave it to gap turbos in Birmingham they said it was all good which was a huge releif so stuck it back on. Turned out to be the fuel pump, so diesel was mixing with the engine oil causing similar symptom to me thinking the turbo was playing up. Also was causing poor mpg but I don't drive it that much to realise, nearly 10 litres drained was lucky no serious damage was done. So after new fuel pump, fluid and filter change plus new expansion tank ( hopefully solve my coolant loss) the x5 drives like a dream. Have to replace some suspension arms from the last mot so am finishing off suspension with some eibach antiroll bars will report on the effect hoping it will take te turns a bit more flatter.
