Looks like 2009 onwards, but could be earlier. The E53 had some to either side of the main kidney grilles, but my X6 doesn't have any. They may arrive on the LCI model in June though. The brake duct grilles are cosmetic on the X6 so maybe they aren't needed, or the grilles that are open are because airflow is needed all the time for cooling etc?

They are officially quoted as being used for...

Active aerodynamics: Active control of the air flaps in the radiator grille and the brake air shafts enhances the car’s overall efficiency to an even higher level. The air flaps are opened only when the engine really requires additional cooling air, while remaining closed when not required in order to optimise the car’s aerodynamics.

Have been trying to look into this as they seem to only be fitted to the 30d and the 40d. the 3.0sd (35d) seems to have missed out and im fairly convinced that not having these is contributing to the poor fuel economy of the 35's. I have seem some 2008 models with them on and then some 2009 models without them. There seems to be now rhyme or reason to them.

Didnt know they werent fitted to the pre LCI X6's though.

Havent looked at the Brake Ducts yet.......will crawl around on the floor later :)
