I have 20" rims on my xdrive40d, still getting used to her but she seems a bit jittery with a bit of pulling on white lines etc...?

Seen a new set of 19" on cheapo auction site, guy wants £900 all in for them, will i see an improvement on handling? I know they will not look as good but could always have them as a winter set if nothing else????

Seems good value but what do you think?

Anyone with any comments on this?

Just wondered if any other drivers feel that the front wheels follow the road contours just a bit too much?

I'm thinking slightly smaller tyre width and additional sidewall height may improve ride quality and may even reduce road noise?

I have both 20" Style 214 for Summer use and 19" Style 258 for Winter use. The ride on the 19" is slightly less harsh but I have not noticed any 'tramlining' but then we don't have any roads around here in such a poor condition.

Any change in grip on white lines is inevitable, regardless of tyre type. As a former motorcyclist I know to avoid 'the white stuff' as t has far less friction value. The wider tyres fitted to the 20" or even 21" mean a lower pressure footprint on the road, but it is small. I'm not sure you will really notice much difference.

What is likely to alter the 'feel' and possibly the ride quality, but not the grip, will be switching from RFT to non-RFT.

Thanks X5Sport, think I'll hold off then.

I'm a little disappointed with the ride at present, think I'm reminiscing to much about my old Q7, as I recall it floated over bumps etc, the X6 is a lot sportier feel and thats what I'm still getting used to. That and being high up once more, having had the 325d touring in between two large 4x4s.

On an up note, It's nice to know that replacement rubber / tyres are not too expensive. This auction was for a brand new set of 19" style 258 with new tyres for only £900!!! I paid nearly £500 for two new run flat front tyres on my 325d touring!

I do like your choice of wheels though, the 214 style is by far the best choice...reminds of my old Focus ST...( I'm grown up now though!)

Any pics of your car with both sets on?

Your wish is granted. They might actually be style 168 (replaced now by style 258 it seems), but they're 19" anyway. Brand new unused and unwanted by an X6 Owner. £500 with tyres from the Dealer..

The Q7 is a softer ride as you say, but then it's hardly set up for 'sporty' performance.

£900 is a 50% discount on the rims alone....

Nice set of pics, really like the sat nav screen in the mini!

£900 is a good price but not compared to your £500!!! But if you brought all those BMW group cars from the same dealer,a cheap set of alloys is the least he owes you!

It seems unless you pay for adaptive suspension these days you can only have good handling OR good ride

The X5/6 does drive better than the Q7 but boy is the ride terrible !

Nice list of past cars by the way

A couple catch my eye

There would be more cars in that list, but limited to 255 characters in your signature....

Mondeo, Laguna, Berlingo Van and Seicento! Think i've just ruined a half decent list....?

Oh yeah that does ruin it and there are still some pups in there :fuelfire: but the lotuses/Loti caught my eye as did the porker (check out my abbreviated list if you hadn't already!)

Always had a soft spot for the ST focus and yet never got to drie one!

The Maserati was brilliant and utter tripe in equal measures! No regrets though, my first toy car.
Porsche was fantastic but circumstances at the time meant it had to go.
M3 was just scary in speed and potential repair costs.
ST was nice and could be docile or lairy depending on mood, good ride too!
And the 325i saved my life in a head-on crash in Ireland!
I enjoyed writing the list, had forgotten a few so it brought a smile back....

Your list is fine, loving the new boxster! In fact all of them...!

I think the only car I have bonded with the most is the Exige. I loved the previous Elise but it was a bit slow hence I bought the Exige and then spent a few more bob on it........

I was going to get rid of it to help fund the Mrs' new Porker (I started looking at the basic one and got a bit carried away and now have an S coming with pretty much every option) but she said I shouldn't as it is my hobby and she knew how much I loved it.

My 535d was probably my best normal car and yet that still had faults.

I am hoping that the two new ones will actually be the ones to make me smile !

I didn't keep either Lotus very long, I brought the 135R to do track days in, but it was just not quick enough and couldn't get over the Rover engine, so changed for Exige with the toyota engine, which was fun, but tracked it once and it was never the same car! Did a full set of Toyos and it started rattling all over. So it went and somehow I made £2500 on it!!!!

Not sure what was the best car to own, loved the M3 power but somehow felt like it might break at any moment! Porsche 968 was quick enough and was solid and trustworthy. Really regret selling that, when it pulled off my drive I felt like running after it? ST was just too thirsty...TT maybe close to best, quick, modern and economical. Q7 was so comfortable but was unreliable, fingers crossed I bond with the X6, looks great and its quick, enough toys to keep me busy, (connected drive is great) just this ride quality issue. Might get those 19" Alloys to see if it helps...?
