Porsche Boxster to X5

Hi all

I am currently looking around for something different and to provide a little more traction in the winter months compared to my Boxster and hopefully a little less yearly running costs. I also like the idea of a higher seating position for a change and something I can go on long driving trips across Europe with more than 2 people. After looking at the Range Rover I decided that its just too big then started looking at the X5, probably a 3.0L remapped diesel.

Now, obviously a Boxster and an X5 are very different but I was wondering if anybody else made this switch? Any observations?
Whats is the X5 like on light snow and slush? Does the 4 wheel drive system still help even tho it has sporty all season wide tyres?
What are considered the must have extras when looking?
Is the X5 generally reliable and what does a full service cost?
I noticed that there are loads of high milage X5's around. I'm probably looking at getting a 2004 3.0L Diesel as a part-ex deal and hope to find one that is around 50k miles, are there any upcoming big service costs around this millage mark?

Thank for any anybody that can help.
Anim

Welcome Anim!!!

We have alfamale who has moved from a Boxster to an X5 4.4 and Jig is a rare beast with both. PM them to get more advice perhaps...

As for your other questions, read AW8's Buyers Guide in the General Discussions section. It's a VERY good no BS guide!

GShout anytime if any other questions come up but bet the guide ticks most of them! Good luck!

I moved from a Boxster S to a 3.0D X5 and added a C2 996 911 at the same time.

They are totally different cars designed to do a totally different job. You can't compare and it would be foolish to try and do so (IMO) ;)

Heya Sanj

Thanks for replying. I have just read that guide you mention! Its brilliant and now im re-thinking if the MPG + Insurance group saving on the 3.0 Diesel is that far from a 4.4i V8 over a few years. Anyway, half the fun is all this research :)

Cheers
Aim

Oh I agree, not trying to compare but i am trying to justify the switch for the different reasons :)

Me three, I came from a Boxster S to a 4.6is. Won't have another Porsche now, not that I didn't like it, but just totally different and far more practical and if you drive like a @%&*(me) still as much fun

If you are considering a 4.4i, then get a 4.8iS. The 4.8 iS is more economical as it has the valvetronic engine. Avoid the 4.6 iS on fuel consumption alone .
Once you have a 4.8, then go out and hunt boxters to terrorize.................!

Regards

Nat.

Hi guys

Hmm, I see your point. with the 4.8is its Group 20 not 19 but that's all the additional cost difference I could find. According to Parkers its the same tax band as the Boxster (£245 a year) and the 4.4, 4.6 and 4.8 all list roughly the same MPG (give or take 1mpg).

To be honest, terrorizing Boxster owners does sound quite appealing lol. Just need to make sure its not on the twisties.

The insurance is a bit of a stinger compared to the 3.0D and the 3.0i petrol.........but its a small price to pay for the sheer driving pleasure :)

23rd March 2006 is the cut off date before the same car, same model, with similar emissions falls into the next tax bracket and comes in at over £400 plus!!!

Buy one before then, that's all.

I have a 2006 (higher Tax bracket) X5 and a 2006 987 Boxster S and to be honest the X5 is the first car I think of jumping in! Even the wife loves it now!!
