Which diesel fuel do you use ??
Which diesel fuel do you use ??
For some years now I have always used Shell V Power, previously with my petrol cars and now diesel in the X5. I found that in my petrol cars the V Power made a discernible difference in performance, so have always bought V Power diesel since getting the X5.
Right at the moment courtesy of the still disrupted supply with the feared tanker driver strike and resultant mass panic, none of the garages round my way have it, so I'll be going for something different. Probably BP Ultimate if I can find it.
Made me wonder though what fuel others find best ? Am I perhaps showing excessive brand loyalty given the cars wearing the logo in F1?

Re: Which diesel fuel do you use ??
Supermarket fuels. If they keep giving me £0.10p/litre vouchers and I can't see £11 (much more with the vouchers) a tank of improvement between BP Ultimate or Shell V-Power and supermarket fuels then I can't see any justification in using it.
We don't have a Shell station locally and the only BP Station is on the A1 and therefore likes to charge at least 10p or more per litre extra on top of there already higher standard fuel cost.

Re: Which diesel fuel do you use ??
as above realy evaen if you do get a tiny % improvement in performance and economy you have paid for it first up front with the primium price and all uk fuel is of a good grade anyway so i use the cheapest!

I must admit, I assumed that all would be using a premium fuel having spent a small fortune on the car itself. Good to hear that you can't really tell the difference.
I think I'm also affected by the dodgy supermarket fuel scandal all those years ago, with it coking up engines. Think I'll stick with the premium products where I can as I'm a pretty low mileage driver anyway. I could certainly discern a performance difference in the premium petrol but maybe the diesels are different ...

Not same quality. I have first hand experience of the difference. We had a 318i which was run on supermarket fuel for quite sometime and after quite some time period (I have to say) it started to play up a touch. I took it to a very good friend of mine who was a BMW master tech who after checking everything over asked me what fuel we were using. When he found out he told me to use Shell/BP for a few tank fulls and see how I got on. And tbh after a number of tank fulls of decent premium fuel the engine actually smoothed out and ran far better.
This was a few years ago now but then only a couple of longs ago a friend with a 58 plate Jag XF started to feel a slight hesitance / miss in the engine. Again he's been running it on very cheap fuel. After a few tank fulls of BP fuel he said it is performing better.
Supermarket fuel is in essence from the same refineries, etc but may not contain the same beneficial additives that help to keep injectors, etc clean and performing their best.

Re: Which diesel fuel do you use ??
I would say its all the same as the refinary on teeside all makes of tankers go in inc supermarkets and as for it causing trouble realy you would never know if it was the fuel or not as it may of happened anyway! I fill mine on a fuel card at a hgv card only unattended forcourt does that mean my diesel is lower grade as its ok in £130k truck!

Re: Which diesel fuel do you use ??
I generally use tesco diesel on my x6 but add millers fuel additive in every tank, I don't notice the difference when running the more premium fuels. My daily workhorse is a 4 year old passat with 128000 miles on it and that has been run for the past 50000 on tesco diesel with Millers fuel additive and never had any issue with it, having said that it has had new injectors at 96000 miles but they are now recalling passats with the 2.0tdi engine because of the injector issue anyway so I don't think the fuels caused the issue. I only use tesco for the club card points as we generally get a couple of long weekends away a year on them.

Re: Which diesel fuel do you use ??
I agree with Raj - it's not the same quality. I always avoid supermarket fuel and stick to the regular diesel at Shell/BP/Esso/Total and I'm perfectly happy with my car's performance and economy.
Re: Which diesel fuel do you use ??
+ one for Raj and Ivan's opinion - if I can find it, I use BP Ultimate or Shell v-Power, my X5 definitely prefers it and runs smoother on the BP or Shell. I try to avoid supermarkets, but when I've used them as no other option, its been ok. Tesco have a high octane fuel available as well and I use this if I absolutely have no other alternative.

I'm assuming you never put diesel in yours though? They tend to smoke a bit...

I have run trucks and diesel cars for many years on Asda supermarket diesel and covered many thousands of miles with no problems at all ,
