Tyre Pressure sensor

Post by Pete » Sat Sep 18, 2010 7:29 pm

The warning light came on yesterday (not knowing what it was I dreaded what it could be!) I've now put some air in all around as some tyres were in fact low. The light is still on even after topping up the air, I read in one online manual that there is a reset button for the warning lamp but I can't find it - was this on the earlier model? Mine is the facelift 54 reg.

Thanks in advance.

turn the ignition to step one on the barrel (ie the engine not started but power to the car), then press and hold down the pressure sensor button above the ash tray for 5 seconds, the light will go from red to amber. Now start the car and the light will dissapear.

Pete - the reset button is in the row of buttons just below the heating controls, but the three letters on the button don't make it obvious - you have to eliminate the others: it's not the heated seats, boot release, stability/traction control, hill descent or parking distance sensors - i think that leaves only one. The system works by sensing the speed of rotation of the tyres from the wheel sensors for the ABS/stability controls: as the tyre pressure reduces the whell rolling diameter decreases so the wheel sppeds up relative to the others. That's why you need to reset the system when you top up the tyres so it knows where it is 'starting from' in terms of wheel relative rotation speeds. There are no batteries in the wheels on this particular model, though i believe there were on others (and these gave an actual psi reading in the dash I seem to recall)

Thanks so much for the responses, I have now managed to clear it.

Cheers petert, you were right that the button wasn't obvious. I'm not sure why BMW decided to change the button from the logo version but for future reference the one I needed to press had "RDC" written on it and is in exactly the same position as the one circled by x555 - I initially thought it was something to do with the rear parking sensons

I don't think bmw changed the button as mine is a 54 plate aswell but i have the button in the picture above :? and in the manual it shows that button also and refers to the run flat indicator as RPA.
What button do others have????? what does it show in your handbook Pete?

Mines a 53 with RDC button. I also get a message in the middle of the dash under the clocks 'check tyre pressure', to reset turn ignition to position 1 press and hold RDC button, stars now appear on dash, then message 'tyre pressure set'. - so does it depend on which dash (clocks) configuration you have?

Going off what I've read I think there are two systems that BMW use - one system that is connected to ABS and one that is transmitted by radio.

I also notice that my parking sensor button looks different to yours X555- mine simply says PDC on it.... I think I'd have been better suited to the idiot proof logo buttons :D !

That's because when I owned the car I fitted a revised interior with heated seats and the switch module came from a slightly older car.

Ahhhh! so that explains the wrong button then  they must have changed it from 2004 onwards by the looks of things.

I suspect the three letters on the 'wrong' button have a sensible meaning in another language - be interesting if we have any guesses from our multilingual members!
