Sensible advice for checking fuses!

If you have to check or remove fuses i would suggest taking a photo of them all first!
The booklet with the car is useless and BMW's suggestion was to check with google
After having gone through the fuses at the weekend to check why the roof wasn't working it would appear i put one back in the wrong place and had killed the comfort access. Swapped a few around and after killing the OBC ive finally managed to get them all back in the right place and everything works again but will definitely be taking pics next time

I was checking one at a time and still managed to put one back in the wrong place.....according to the sheet in the car there are over 140 spaces for fuses!
It was one of the small blade ones and it would seem i just managed to bump it up one as there was a couple of empty spaces

Personally i would expect the car to diagnose it, call BMW and then drive itself there to have it changed.......
After the chat with the guys at BMW they said they dont even have a plan of which fuse does what.....they plug it into the computer and the computer tells then where to look.
The guide to which fuse did what was so much better in the E53.
Not to mention how difficult it is to actually get to some of the fuses in the box under the glove box

Only if you're registered with BMW's DNA Bank as a trained BMW technician. Otherwise it stays quiet and sniggers!!
Whatever happened to the good old days of electrics when there were about 6 fuses and that was all! Maybe that's why I can't find an all in one wiring diagram. Mind you the last 'modern vehicle' one I had was for a Honda VFR800 motorbike and that had to be printed on A0 to be of any use! I dread to think what these ones look like (but I still want one!).

I imagined it playing a game like battleships with you as you guessed at which fuse...to which it would sink some vital component to get its own back. I can't even find one for the e53...without going to the car that is

You guys saying the newer cars don't have a label attached telling you what fuse is associated to what numbered slot????

Was thinking the same thing...
Also I always check the number of the slot I'm pulling out of to ensure I put it back in right........waits for the dirty minded to read that back...lol

Someone care to explain 'Luon Girls' - on anothe topic in the lounge so as not to hijack this one!
I don't even know where the fusebox is on my E71.....
I take the fuse chart is in with it? The E53/E46 have a nice card in the lid, but that looks like being more complicated than needs be as you seem to need to look, read and interpret piccies all at the same time and probably whilst trying to be a contortionist and hold a blasted torch!
Some of the symbols look a bit odd too! I mean, what are Col 1, symbols 4, 11 and 12 supposed to be?

One of the fuse boxes is in the boot so easily accesible.....the other one is under the front glovebox on the passenger side......it drops down but really not enough to be of any help.
Maybe BMW has a new Egyptian head of tech and thought Hieroglyphics would be a good route to take.
There is some logic to it though as pictures covers all languages but god does it cause a headache when you have to work out which of the 13 fuses might relate to the random square box on the chart!
