Halfords Castrol magnatec oil cheap

Post by swipe » Sat Mar 31, 2012 5:47 pm

Guys just thought I'd let you know if anyone is thinking of doing an oil change over the bank hoilday weekend check out Halfords.
Was down at my local halfords getting some Castrol magnatec oil for my Mercedes and the mrs X5, and the guys told me that the castrol oil would be nearly half price from the 5th.
Castrol Magnatec 5W30 Oil 4 litres is £30.99 at the moment and will be down to around £17.00 from the 5th, I'll be picking up 8 litres on thursday making a nice saving for her X5 :D

You do not want to use Castrol Magnatec in your X5 .
Use only oil specified , BMW LL 01 , BMWLL04 .Castrol SLX is what dealers sell or as Halfords sell Castrol Edge 5w30 or 0w30 . ONLY FULLY SYNTHETIC OIL WILL DO .
:rtfm: will show which oil is suitable for any car . don`t be fooled into buying any old crud .

Regards the Castrol oils, you want the one that says Edge on it, to comply with BMW standards.

That I got for £35 for 4 litres at Asda. Bought 5...

Personally I'd not use Magnatec. Only one version (Castrol Magnatec 5W-30 A3/B4) does meet LL01, but it's not a fully synthetic oil, and it doesn't meet the later LL04 spec. BMW specify synthetic only, so EDGE would be a much better choice. The only Magnatec Diesel that is a synthetic is their 5W-40 but that's the wrong grade and non-compliant.

But it's your motor and your bank as they say. If the X5 has got very high mileage on it then may be. Otherwise I would only ever use the 'right stuff' as they say. I think the last car I used Magnatec on was a 1989 Cavalier with 100,000 miles on it and it had a new engine fitted 6-months later - not related to the oil I hasten to add, it was just knackered.

Castrol edge has different specs . check compatibility .Label should say LL04 . Usually says Merc , VW , BMW on the one you want . Will also have API SM or Swhatever approval , hence you should read the link I posted .
Also worth buying an oil filter from dealer as anything else will not be as good .
National tyre centers will change oil with correct spec cheaper than you can buy oil but take a BMW filter with you .
Expensive oil is expensive for a reason .
