Coolant Temperature.

Anyone any idea what the ideal coolant temperature should be for efficient running?

Got into the menu's and was having a look. The thread reckons anything below 90c but i know the fan doesnt kick in on my bike till its 104c so was after a more definitive temp

Definitely 92 degrees C.

What temperature is your car running after warm up?

My Honda VFR800 VTEC used to cut in just above 100C as well, but given it could rev to something silly like 14,000rpm it wasn't really surprising! It did not even go to full power until over 7,000rpm - but then whoosh!! Oh hello Officer.. :cry:

Going to use it for a few trips to work this week and will see what the temperature goes up too. Depending on that i might have a go at blocking the front grill and seeing what happens.....at least with the temperature gauge ill be able to see if its about to boil.

Info i really should find out is at what temperature the thermostats are supposed to open at.

Unwise move as you will cut-off the airflow for the A/C and gearbox oil cooler radiators too. The latter could cause you some trouble. If you have a diesel (sorry, can't remember what version yours is) then you will also cut off the flow to the turbo intercooler.

Is your temp running high on the iDrive? Just wondered what has caused you to need to investigate? I know we don't have temp guages - not the best idea of BMWs as I'd much rather have that than the econometer any day - but have you got a problem?

I shouldnt be cutting off the airflow for the gearbox and turbo intercooler as both of these are at the bottom of the radiator and so you get the airflow through from the bumper grilles.

Am literally just thinking about restricting some of the airflow through the main grille.

This has all come about because of noticing that the later model x5's have the flaps in the grille where mine doesnt.....that and trying to find an explanation about why the fuel economy on the 35d's are so poor. At the moment its worse than both my e53 3.0d and my friends 40d but a considerable amount.

Obviously im not going to do anything that i think would be detrimental to the engine, gearbox etc. Not sure i need to worry about the aircon now its got so cold again LOL

I know what you mean about temps! Almost worth putting Winter Rubber back on.... :D

Have you had an emissions check done to see if there's anything wrong with the fuel/air mix? What state is your DPF in? Just wondering if you have a blockage - can be caused by short journeys. Do you ever get the car's engine fans running on after switch-off sometimes? Mine do and I'm told it's whilst the DPF 'burn-cycle' is running so that the temps are controlled. Apparently the DPF gets VERY hot to burn the soot off, and the fans run to prevent damage to the car. Mine run on for about 10 mins.

Only just taken the winters off so will be quite annoyed if it starts to snow :(

Havent heard the fans going yet......am assuming the DPF is ok as it does do some short runs but also some long motorway stuff.

It has been into BMW and they reckon there is nothing wrong so im just curious really as i realise that ultimately the only thing i can do is buy a 40d ;) obviously i wouldnt go for the 30d as they are just for people who cant handle the power :fuelfire:
