brake pads 4.4 facelift

Bit of info please...

Planning changing the pads on my X soon had a look last week and they are getting low,Disks are fine.
The warning lights haven't come on yet so wanting to change before it hits the sensor...

Where do you guys that change your own pads get them from? BMW dealer or cheaper for the same spec or better online?

Also will i have to replace the sensors even though they haven't been activated?

I'd just buy them from either GSF or Eurocarparts tbh. You don't need to change the sensor if it hasn't tripped.

what pads would you recommend from ECP i see they do
textar,pagid & eicher slightly diff prices?

what make are EOM pads on the X5?

well after asking the question i did a search on realoem which i should have done before. it looks like they are the same for europe spec ones but the ones in stateside aren't. please correct me if am wrong. it seems like the OE type brake pads made by pagid/textar.

I bought pagids (all round and discs from pagid too) for my 3.0d facelift

no warping or whatever....can be dusty though..not massive....but noticeable
discs came painted too

not a recommendation....just an observation of 1

Do you find the pagid setup to produce a lot of brake squeal? Mine seem to and not sure if it's just not enough copper grease on the back of the pads.

Raj sorry if I'm teaching you to suck eggs but was once told and now practice filing a 45degree chamfer on leading edge of pad which usually stops squeal

No worries. Am aware of that but it's just pagid have always tended to squeal even with a chamfered edge. My BBK's I've just removed started life with Pagid pads and they were really bad for squeal but then a lot of performance pads squeal due to higher operating temps, etc. was more interested to see if Mike's also squealed as if they do not then it may actually be as simple as lack of copper grease on the pads.

Not at first, the backs seemed to have what looked like very hard thin resin (or similair)layer on the back which I guess avoided any metal on metal pad movement induced noise.

The pads were and are chamfered out of the box before anyone asks

When I installed them I went (nearly) mad with the copper grease.
Over the ears of the pads
Over the faces of the caliper where the ears touched/slid
Over the fingers of the outer half of the caliper where they touched the pad...and on the pad back itself
around (and in) the piston on the inner caliper...and on the face where the piston touched

The pads/discs were installed last summer with no problems
around 2 weeks ago I got a squeek from the front offside pads. Not a squeel....not when braking either....more a mini annoying squeek when the discs were rotating about 20 mph and the not all the time either

I pulled the caliper apart and re-copper greased as above......noise vanished. 10 minute job with a trolley jack and a hex key socket set.

My problem I think is that pads are a wee bit too loose in the carrier. We're talking a mm at most but rather that than jam....which is what did (uneven wear and braking wobble) for the last discs and pads that were on when I purchased the x5. I cleaned the crud off good and proper including polishing the guide pins to a mirror finish with autosol

also the hard backing may have become a little worn too (cant quite remember) so I might begetting a little more metal to metal...but that's a guess

As I said it's not a pedal induced squeek....more like a being there and being moved/dragged as the disc passes..which vanished as soon as I touched the pedal. Oddly the squeek came and went on steering suggesting a wee bit of flexing

dont loose the little clip off the sensor when you pull them

i replaced my front pads a month ago with pagids, Now you mention it... i forgot to coppergrease the backs as i would normally do.
however, i have no squeals or extra dust to speak of so far..
