For our sins the wife has a Freelander 1 that in December 2010 developed a fault with the window regulator

I think it's a cable driven affair and it snapped leaving a rats nest of wire. The indy I use for the BM replaced it at a parts cost of £137 +vat + labour.

It's now started making a crunching noise at a certain part of its travel and I fear that the cable may once again be about to fail.

Any thoughts on what my rights are becasue if this was a new car you'd expect it to last a good while...let alone not fail. Chances are this is a potential design flaw. I'm not sure whether it's a genuine or pattern part but given it's not a spark plug or generic thingybob oil fliter I'd assume it's a landrover part

Whatever the origin it may be duff after 15 months....should I expect a replacement gratis as it may not be exceeding life beyond normal expectancy?

Depends upon what warranty was originally offered with the repair, and what would be considered a 'reasonable life' for the parts. Personally I would say that this is a premature failure. There is also the possibility that the original repair did not actually fix an underlying issue, or may not have been done correctly in accordance with the manufacturers requirements etc.

Got to be worth a try.....but the legal position may be that you're not covered unless you can prove something wasn't done properly, or a manufacturing/repair defect. It can be a minefield as more than a few have found.

well I just have a receipt with parts and labour prices on it. If it were a new car you'd expect 6 or 7 years life out of switches knobs etc. It's no a consumable as far as I can see except for the fact the wires move back and forth. The car has done no more than 6000 miles since...perhaps plenty of up and down windowing but that's what the window does

The car goes in for MOT at the same place so I shall without being rude suggest it's failed too early....they've had plentyof my business before. I get the feeling that 12 months is a watershed but as i've heard on many tv programs time may not be the issue....rather fit fo purpose may apply here
