BMW Recall - 5 & 6 series - fire risk

This won't affect many, but some here have multi-BMW fleets ( ) and if you have a 5 or 6 series made in the period 2003 to 2010 this WILL be of interest.

Risk of fire with faulty battery cables.....

in general, how do poor sods like some of us who own second hand cars get the benefit of recalls?

do the manufactures trace the current owners through teh dvla? (high hopes there i'm sure!)

or is it up to the owners to reach out to the manufactures?

Once you have a service at a dealers, you are in the computer so you will get the notices as well.

Not sure what happens if you never get into the network ...

All recalls are carried out with the manufacturer, VOSA and DVLA all involved to track down owners of affected vehicles. After the first wave of recalls go out there is normally another round done 6 months after to mop up any that didn't get picked up first time. Recalls work on different severity levels some are done as and when the affected cars go into dealers for routine servicing some get immediate contact.

I should also add that I haven't heard anything about mine as of today :tumbleweed:

The news only broke last night, and with 109,000 cars 'at risk' it might be a while. Add BMW's er 'Reluctance' to ever admit one of their cars has had the temerity to show a series (I do mean series) fault, to the snails pace that VOSA and the DVLA work at......you'll hear in 2025. :headbang:

Couldn't agree more. If the Mini Cooper S issue is anything to go by we'll need a few to go up in flames first to get the ball rolling :x

Hi Chompers, you have exactly the same touring as me, same colour & year & model we must have good taste!

Only difference is i have boring black dakota leather, i am pleased with the mpg compared to the 4.8is obviously but i find the 20d engine is really slow, what are your thoughts?

Cheers.

Lee, I find the same going from the X6 40d to the Mini SD. I know it's 2.0l and 156bhp, but it just doesn't seem to want to get up and go and it's not a big car being built on the 1er platform.....the 520d tourer is a big car for that same sized engine, and you're spoilt by the 4.8 of course... :( I don't know what the power of the engine in the 520d is?

We had an E46 325i Conv before the 330Cd version and they were chalk and cheese too. On paper the 325i should have been fine, but we both found that because it was an auto, the engine had to be worked very hard to make it go because the car was so heavy (1.7t) and the mpg plummeted. The 330d is a rocket ship!

Can Jason help with the mapping on your 520d?

Great taste indeed  I came from a V8 e53 to my 520d and while yes there is a clear difference i performance, the V8 had nearly double the bhp!!! In real world driving the difference is negligible IMO. Mid range there is more than enough punch from the 20d. The biggest difference is fuel consumption, the V8 would be around 22 mpg for the runs I do (local, school etc) the Tourning is near double that. Also running costs are and will be much less. I also stated at the time I bought my, nearly 2 years ago now that the e61 was a much better family car again IMHO that the e53. Rear seat afforded more room, easier fitment of car seats, bike rack ( 5hep :poke: )

Think thats enough of me bigging up the e61, after all this an 'X' forum and I have only been back a few days :fuelfire: :D

Hi x5sport, its 177 bhp & i agree its a large car to shift around & your suggestion of a remap is a good one, i just have to accept it for what it is & it drives lovely its just you have to work it to get going & i am not used to doing that.

Its half the power of the x5 so i am bound to feel a big difference.

Thanks for replying Chompers, the car is ideal for my two labradors & very practical & i love the economy & the steering feel is great, i am just adjusting to the performance difference which i will get used to.

No problem Lee. Do you still have the iS aswell? Black interior was a good choice. With 2 dogs the cream would get trashed as mine has with 2 kids :headbang:

The x5 had to go as it was crippling on fuel & i couldnt justify the costs, the missus has a e90 330d so i had an idea of how good the beemer diesels are.

I am still hanging on to one V8 my TVR Cerbera 4.5 & fuel isnt a concern as i only do about 3k miles a year in it, but i do miss the power as the x5 was my daily but a 45 mile round trip took its toll.

I do miss the x5 for the sound especially, but i think i underestimated the running costs for such a quality beast, my touring works out a treat, insurance has nearly halved & tax is loads cheaper & mpg is impressive on a long run & its doing 45mpg currently & i got 12mpg out of the x5 commuting if i gunned it!
