Anyone changed there brake pads ?

My fronts are due approx 1500 miles and just want to get a bit of info before i order them, tackle it.
I done the full set on my 2006 X5 in about an hour but just wondered if the I drive or any other gizmo's would be upset at me doing it and I have not looked yet to see if any special tool needed.

Any info cause stealers want to steel £500 and yes just for pads all round  Foooking twats.

regards

Sorry, no. Not got enough miles on yet. £500 parts and labour doesn't surprise me with Dealer labour charges at around £140 an hour now in some areas. I don't know how they think they can justify that level though. Seems too high just for one set.

Can't see why the iDrive would get cross. As long as you change pads and wear sensors, all should be OK.

EDIT: now I'm more awake, I'm sure the menu prices I saw in my dealer for front pads were nearer £180 fitted. I think the rears were a little more expensive - don't understand why unless that included the handbrake shoes too?

Are they changing all-round AND the discs too? I can understand that being around £500, but not otherwise... :o

Well done, would be useful if you could list part numbers and where you purchased said pads ( yes, I am very lazy!!! )

Any issues / hints on fitting?

Very easily done, and easily missed too..... :(

Had that happen after a tyre change on the E53.  Didn't check, and didn't notice for months.. :-[

By pure luck the Dealer had the same one as they had ordered a replacment for one of their own fleet and it had subsequently been found again.  Got it free.. :)

I'm a lot more careful about that now!  Also about the towing loop - as the same Dealer 'mislaid' the one off the car during the gearbox saga - they're over £20 a pop too.... >:(

We're they able to identify a replacement by a code, or was it mix and match until one fitted?  Just curious as there seems to be no code marked on the tool.  Mine has a coloured sticker, but apparently that means nothing.

Hi, my Idrive says front pads due in 9000m and rears in 12000. X5 is march 2011 just over 26000m on the clock.
Was changing front tyres at Indy and lad told me that front pads need replacing very soon and close from scratching discs.

How is that idrive shows 9k and they say pads need replacing? Has anyone experienced similar issue and can I actually trust idrive at all ?

Thanks

The iDrive probably works on a best guess on mileage, not on what the pad position actually is.  I always trusy my eyes rather than a computer on critical systems.. ;)

This thread caught my attention as my E70 is reading 4300 on rear pads to go.

I never trust these things after wrecking a set of rear discs on an e46 318i I had by trusting the obc!

Anyway, has anyone used Jason's other side of the business - his repair stuff - other than his tuning side?
Just wondered if it'd be worth going to him rather than a dealer!

Dealer quoted 293.73 for front pads replacement including labour. First independent quote was 152.32 but but they fit Paget which I am not sure about quality....
