Hi, last month i moved to a X5 (E53 2006 3.0d sport) from my 2007 E61 530d touring and even though they are similar ages, my previous E61 was much better spec'd - which included Sat Nav. Is there a way I can upgrade my headunit in the X5 to a BMW sat nav unit? as my sport version doesnt have one fitted. Is it just a case of finding one 2nd hand and then doing the quick swap? will the wiring etc just plug and play?
Does anyone have any exericence of this?

Just as a foot note, im doing 186 miles commute a day and the comp in the X5 is showing average of 34mpg which isnt too bad i guess?

You can add Satnav via a couple of non-OEM options which people have done on here to replace failed units. Look for Hualingen via search.

Adding the OEM option is possible but VERY expensive and complex. It requires major work with large parts of the interior having to come out so you can get the looms in. Even BMW have it as an over one full day to fit job. There are modules needed front and back, programming and coding done, GPS antennas to be fitted etc etc.

Your mpg sounds about right too...

Have to say, I thought the E53 came pre-wired. Oh well. If the wiring harness is there (you can check in the left handside cubbyhole in the boot) then it can be retrofitted. I have a secondhand headunit anyway.

If you have the screen at the front it's very easy - just a small additional wiring harness that plugs in at the back, fit antenna, fit nav drive - 30 minutes and you're done (I did this recently). If you don't have the screen at the front it's a whole lot of extra work and expense.
