Steering wheel trim peeling away !

Post by X5_twin » Tue Mar 13, 2012 4:51 pm

Does anybody have any suggestions for fixing this? Its drives me mad seeing this everyday. Can it all just be peeled of or can it be replaced easily? Any advice much appreciated.

If it's under warranty, it's new wheel time. And if not, try goodwill with the dealer. BMW have had problems with this since the E53 days, and ought to have learnt how to sort it by now.

Button pads aren't available as a separate item on this car (they are on some other models). Try and get them to agree to replace the wheel only as the airbag can be transferred over.

The paint used to be a rubber based coating.

it sure is a common problem, exactly the same spot where it's peeled away on my steering wheel. Good luck with the stealers!!

Thanks for the tip. However is there any such thing as "good will" when it comes to main dealer !?

In a lot of cases yes. Don't know the age of your car, but if it's only just out of warranty then you can say that this really should last a lot longer on a 'Luxury' car such as the E70 and ask if BMW will contribute towards replacing the wheel. I would expect trims like this to last a lot longer.

It's worth a try, and given they are now the 2nd biggest car seller after GM, they can afford it. The Dealer makes the case to BMW GB. Just keep pressing them and point out this is a known issue.

Why don't they just make it in matt plastic rather than cover shiny plastic in a matt finish ! Very odd. Surely BMW need to think about this. It looks tacky. Especially as the steering wheel is the one part of the car you have contact with and look at regularly. Looks cheap. Not impressed BMW.

Besides peeling it all of there is not much you can do. Any suggestions/. Doubt very much dealer in London would care! Might try later in the week.

Thanks for that. What a great job he did. It looks superb after the spraying, like new.

I'm not sure I'm up to it might will look into it. Thanks again for the link.
