Hi I was spoilt tonight by my brother in law who has just got an 58 plate X6 xdrive 3.5d with all the toys. He gave me the keys to have a drive and it would be rude not too. Well what can I say apart from I was blown away I was truely convinced it wasn't a diesel such a nice sound I thought it was a V8.

It's now left me in a quandry here I am looking at a 2004 4.4 or 4.8 X5 petrol and I've now driven that car and he's getting 32mpg -now which part of my body do I sell to medical research to pay for it? Lol oh well maybe in a couple of years if I save hard

I have a 35d X5, it doesn't do anything like that MPG so don't base your thoughts on that. Depends a lot on driving but my average is 10mpg less.

My 2011 X6 40d achieves that mpg with no problem - even when 'making progress' and I've seen better than that too on motorway runs, but then most of my driving is out of town on faster roads. Having the 8-speed transmission probably helps too. Around town I get in the 28-29 mark.

Give in to the 'grin factor' temptation and I can make the mpg drop away. Agree on the sound though. It's not the diesel-ish sort of noise I got used to with the E53. There's a definite roar which has 'intent' in it when given the opportunity and a clear road.

Incidentally, it's not a 3.5l, the numbers denote a twin turbo, same as the 40d (Engine code N57S) is just a tweaked 35d (M57D2) - same basic engine (apart from the N57 being the next generation of the M57 also found in the E53 - M57TUD30), different turbos and even more bhp (306 - though 302 seems to be the current published figure now). They're all 3.0 litre 6-cyl units. The 40d got the 8speed box, the 35d has the latest generation (and hopefully more reliable) 6-sp ZF transmission similar to the E53.

Even Vines sales guy kept talking about the 4.0 Litre engine, and I kept having to correct him. :headbang:

Wait until you see what chandlers have ordered for you - bet you didn't know there was already a 2.0d X5, yours will be the first!

It might even be made of aluminium too.....

BTW - why has it taken BMW so long to start using ali in its new cars? Audi have been doing it for years, and successfully at that. Bonding it isn't an issue, shaping it the same. Patents? Heads in the sand? Money? It's also the most common metal on the planet - near the surface at least. So what's been the problem?

Just curious.
