4.4 Vs 4.8

Post by Cannondale » Sun Feb 12, 2012 6:05 pm

Has anyone driven a face lift 4.4 and a 4.8.

Just wondering how much diffrance there is between them in the real world, driving pleasure and MPG?

Are the V8,s much better than a Derv?

I test drove a 2004 FF Range Rover 4.4 V8yesterday and was not overwelmed by performance. Just hope the X5 is better.

Thanks Rich...

4.4 Vs 4.8

Post by kkodal78 » Sun Feb 12, 2012 7:02 pm

i used to own a 540 with a 4.4 and it was a thrill to drive it but i believe when it comes to X5 it wont be as quick. i now have a 4.6 with remap and i love it . you are looking at 20-24 mpg depending on how you drive in any of the 4.4 , 4.6, 4.8 but i think driving the 4.8 would be whole a lot better than 4.4. even the way the car looks very different from the two. you get a lot more with the iS models.

I'm rather biased towards the 4.8is - mine delivers in every area, even has good fuel consumption, for a V8, that is, and literally all the toys.......most of the 4.8iS models have a lot of spec as standard which the other models would have needed as "extras" when new. Lots of reviews on Xoutpost - take a look. For me, its the 4.8 every time, but obviously its a personal choice :)

Hi being new to the foruum myself I was faced with same dilema but I found the e53 buyers guide very helpful and made me ask a few questions. having driven both the 4.4 and 4.8 they are both capable and being v8's they sound nice.

The 4.8 seems to have more spec but this is offset in my opinion by the air suspension on the front and the pan roof. Both are nice to have as long as they work. From talking to local Indy shop he advised against both even though he had one in for a fix on a pan roof between £1 and £2k to fix.

Ultimately it's what you want don' t settle for second best and take your time there are lots out there. It's easy to pick a bad one. For me I only found 1 car with a pan roof worked properly out of 8 cars.

I picked a 4.4 for several reasons : cheaper to buy my brother inlaw let me have it at trade which helps. Leaving me with some spare cash to do a few bits like 4.8 arches and wheels. The lower insurance cost by £200 a year, and as he said to me how many times a year will you use the pan roof - when it's hot you open the windows or if it's too hot you close it up and put the climate control on. But get the one you want.

For me it was the 4.8 everytime. (1) was the 4.8 engine is an Alpina item which I really wanted and (2) was that the spec was very important (especially going from an E60 M5) and I wanted all the bells and whistles.

I'm not worried about the issues mentioned above as they all have rear air suspension anyway so a couple of extra airbags isn't a personal problem. Also the pan roof only really has a problem with the rear vent section from all the horror stories you read and there is a simple fix to disable the rear vent section and the front will happily function.

Most of the other issues are common to just the X5's in general.

Good luck with which ever designation you go for.

just a quick one to stand up for the 4.4. I have a sport 2004, and it's epic. sadly getting driven less and less as I recently got a c63 so that's getting most of my attention these days. Depends on what you're looking for really, you could save a lot of money and get a 4.4 that has almost identical performance and looks almost exactly the same. if you're not bothered about purchase price and things like tyres, then the 4.8 is probably the one to go for. Whichever you go for, enjoy it :-)

4.4 vs 4.8 saying identical performance is like saying 3.0 is identical to 4.4.
