i would think to get new glass as opose to film would cost £1000s to be retrofitted, i would either buy one already done or if you get it tinted with film by a very good well recommended tinter you cant tell and you get what you pay for with it!

+1 for getting it done by a tinting film, and by an expert. We used to use Pentagon Glass in London.

You're only other option would be to physically replace all the glass behind the 'B' pillar on both sides plus a new rear screen. That's likely to be very very expensive and much more than having a properly done film tint added. I don't know how well films work on heated windows so you may have to replace the rear screen (via er....whoops, broken screen, insurance) and possibly any side window with radio aerials etc.

Turned out really well actually. I looked into fitting Privacy glass but went for tints .  Dealership did it  & had their usual tint man..... he did a good job.

i just had my wife's Touran tinted all around for £190 and it was a great job he did on it. he said it would have cost the same for the X5. this is for all around tints though not just B pillar back. just to give you an idea.

Cheers for that. So, do they scratch/score eventually and how easy is it to stop them bubbling at the edges?

if the job is in good quality you won't have to worry about bubbles but if you have dirt stuck between the glass snd the door than it will scratch eventually. never had that problem myself.

Just remember to stay on the right side of the 75% light transmission rules forward of the 'B'- pillar, or you may be asked to remove them on the spot.  Some Police forces are less 'tolerant' and insist on removal to comply with the Law.  I'm sure they have better things to do, but.......

We used Pentagon Glass in London to put the anti-theft film (prevents the side and rear windows from getting smashed in) on our fleet and even after a couple of years there were no bubbles or scratches.  As above, if the job is done properly you should not have an issue.  I think we paid around the same prices too.

Can anyone recommend someone for this in the Glasgow area? Maybe it's something the stealers will do....

Most reputable places will not do the front windows unless legal.

Things to note:

1. The film should go right to the edge, none of that cut 3/4mm from the top edge.

2. The film should be applied below the lowest point when the window is fully closed on the doors.

3. The rear will most likely be cut in two halves (if the curve on the rear screen is significant), make sure it doesn't mean one of the rear heating elements are cut! However new films and techniques may make it possible to do this in one piece (been a few years since I had it done).

4. Expect the edges where the film overlaps the black edge to not stick (where you have those little 'dots' trying to create a gradient). It will be visibly whiter (unstuck) between the dots.
