1 series head unit

My significant others head unti has been playing up since buying the car in May 2010. Even though BMW promised (and we have an email saying so) they would replace it under warranty (after the warranty ended due to the infrequent fault but it being recorded before end of warranty) because of the ongoing intermittent fault, its come down to the crunch and the baskets at Dick Lovett in Swindon are now refusing.

Customer sevice severly lacks at BMW doesn't it?! Seems that unless you buy new every year or are a large lease company they just don't give a toss. Last BMW from them thats for sure.

Anyway, can the unit simply be unplugged and replaced by another (for example if we found one on ebay) or does it need coding? DL BMW are suggesting it needs coding but there are plug and play units like Pioneer and Kenwood available on ebay too with the fascia.

Thanks
Paul

If you have an email which says it will be replaced and there are no conditions attached, you have have them over a barrel. If the dealer won't play then I would have thought a gentle reminder that they agreed to replace it and if they don't then you will be forced to escalate to local Trading Standards and also BMW GB might stir something up. More and more often the Dealers are no longer playing and BMW GB are pulling the strings so you just have to get nastier than them. If necessary. Bit of press coverage might help you out...... :poke: BMW

Hi There

If you get another unit the same part number and year from a car with the same spec ie aux connector / bluetooth /etc it will plug and play.

As for your dealer , did you buy the car from them ? if so this should help your cause. I wouls speak to the service manager directly at the dealership not by phone and politly explain your problem informing him how you feel let down and I would be very surprised if he did not help, speaking to service advisors will not help I feel, if you get no joy there contact BMW customer services directly and if your car has full dealer history im sure they will look on you favorably if the car is not to far out of warranty.
Good Luck

Agreed with above. If you get nowhere with the dealer then just contact BMW GB customer services. If you have asked Dick Lovetts to look into it before then it will be logged and as you say you have an email from them confirming so.

Quick update - the dealer principle contacted me and said they have a 1 series kept for the garages own use, they will remove the readio from that and see if they can change the codes and pair it to our car. If so we can have that FOC.

Better than nothing and the radio in our car wasn't new so can't complain. Just waiting to hear if they can recode it.
