steering shaking like mad under breaking

i have a bmw X5 3.0d manual and in the last 3mths i have had this problem happen twice after driving for about an hour when i start breaking the steering wheel shaks like mad as thou the wheels are coming lose and falling off, the first time it happen i though the wheels had come lose but when i stopped and had a look they were all ok. then when i drove away it didnt do it again. i took to garage and they said there is nothing wrong with car anywhere they check everything, then a few weeks late we went on a long trip it did it again when breaking like the wheels had come lose again so i stop turned the car off had a quick look,nothing drove away again and it was fine again, and now when i go out in it , its perfect no shaking at all , has any had this happen to them and what was it PLEASE as my wife does not like going in it like that it is as thou the wheels are coming off please help

Do you get any knocking noises from the front i.e. when you go over bumps?

no all ok the car drives like a dream all the time just this has happened twice in the last 2-3mths it was scary like i said the wheels were coming of, but as soon as i stop get out then start car back up its all ok again

sounds like the sliders on the brake callipers are becoming siezed.

is that a big job and do you know how much please , my wife said maybe one of the callippres maybe siezing up every now and again could that be it

Not a big job really. Remove one front wheel at a time, look behind the calliper you will see two bolts which bolt the calliper to the strut. From memory they are allen key fittings. Undo the bolts, remove and enure they are clean and allow the calliper to slide on them. If you do a search I'm sure you will find a post with a little more detail.
