Hi, This is 2nsd post and need a bit of help deciding on which model a 4.4 or a 4.8.
I want a facelift car and petrol as only use as weekend car, (got small car for work) so prob not worth having a diesel.
I looked at a silver 4.8 black interion with sat nav and pan roof (worked) but prob with air susp and both rear elec window tail lights and tv not working nor phone, Some previous danmage so decided no.
Since then seen a few 4.8 and pan roof all clonk or don't work (so is it worth it ?), better spec - with heated rear seats as well fronts TV and 20 wheels and arches - But worried about air susp so not sure
Looked at coupple 4.4 both black and one good spec high miles 100k but pan roof -clonked and heated rears but late reg 2006 so more road tax. Other one spec less heated & elec memory seats foldy mirrors sat nav but not tv but similar car performance, no pan roof and no upgraded hifi or heated rear seats, but cheaper to buy and insure and no air susp apart from rearself levelling
So help which model should do I poss go for ?

As these cars are not getting any younger, I'd buy on condition and proof of maintenance rather than looking at the spec / model. Just decide what's important to you in terms of options (i.e. will you use that roof or is it not worth the potential repair bills?). Not sure what the performance difference is between 4.4 and 4.8 but it's only a small HP increase 320 / 360 I think.

To give you a guide, at new the 4.4/4.8 V8 models were £10k more expensive that the 3.0 IL6 models - them two extra pots were kinda pricey! The post facelift 3.0d (218bhp) has the same torque as the 4.8. My Dec 2004 built (March 2005 reg'd) 3.0d went for £16k last year with 53k miles and a very high spec which included Sport spec, 6sp auto, pano roof (mine worked) full sat nav, TV, built in phone, higher spec audio, towbar, self-levelling rear susp, heated Comfort seats, adjustable rear seats, black nappa leather, 19" std wheels (20" not avail at the time except on the 4.8is), 4-zone AC, comfort screen, gangsta glass, sunblinds, adaptive Xenons, auto-lights & wipers, auto-dimming mirrors, side skirts, moving load floor, CD changer, and a compass in the mirror (

). At the time and including the service pack, that was a £53,800 car!

Having a simular problem myself. I have a budget or 14K max, and so far I have found a very nice 4.8Is in Black.
I personally no go for the 4.4 as when you want to sell it I think it would be harder to move than a 4.8is.
I am also looking a Dervs mainly because I fell that it will hold its value better. But the 4.8is looks realy tick all the box,s for me.
Good luck Rich...

For 16k you should easily get all the bells and whistles and working too, especially petrol. I got a 54 plate diesel around a year ago high spec for 13k

Thanks for all replies so far I know you should get all the toys and they should be working but its hard finding good ones out there.
Condition and mileage important as seen a few tired 100k mile 4.8 not good and silver one was not so good - estoril blue one and 2 le mans blue all around 15k and all need bits or bits didn''t work - I guess i'm just fussy.
today I rang about a 4.4 on pistonheads black with cream for 14k with 4.8 wheels but sold.

I regret not getting a 4.8, if ur not doing the miles the 4.8 engine and the noise it makes will keep I smile on ur face. I went and picked a mk4 DVD from a local chap and when he fired it up it sounded lovely.

I can't believe you are struggling finding a good spec'd 4.8is for that money. Mine is in perfect condition with everything working just as it should and I wouldn't be looking for £16k if I was selling!
Turks.

Thanks for all your help so far and I agree for 16k you should get it all and it should be working! And i love the idea of the 4.8 but. I have talked to my local BMW specialist and asked him about 4.8 and air suspension he said front airbags 600 and rears 200 and compressors about 1000, so if it goes wrong its expensive but 4.4 has same on rears and compressor.
The 4.8 I got close to buying had air susp inactive and the car was 13k but roof worked.
I then asked about pan roofs and cost to repair between 1-2k and. He said pain in the **** so not good.
he said a good warrenty should cover it.
So armed with more info I checked with a warrenty co and as air susp is a moving part not covered and pan roof again not covered. So I think given the cirs all x5's have air but only 4.8 have front unless option so i'm going for x5 a 4.4 without pan roof and front air susp initially but things may change.
I'll keep you posted

Main dealer prices I assume, they will feed you any old shite to get money out your pockets. parts ain't too bad and easy enough to replace if your ok with a spanner. You need to find yourself a decent independent specialist too. Where are you located? There is a fully loaded 55 plate 3.0d sport in black with 58,000 miles full service history looks immaculate for £14,989 near me in leeds, I know you want petrol but as an idea of what you can get for your money that's pretty good. I'd hold out till you find the right car to be honest.
