.....i realised yesterday is not working, maybe it never has in five years
Does anyone know which fuse this is hooked to? It could easily be that its been disabled by the previous owner so i don't want to splurge for a new swtich if the fuse has just been pulled

I think it goes straight back to the alarm system. Typically it would only provide a ground connection so no power and therefore no fuse required. Causes the alarm to trigger when a 'ground' is provided. At least, that's the way I think it works and matches those saystems I've played with before - which BMW being BMW may not choose to follow as a convention.
I take it you've tried the usual open the bonnet, press the lock button and after a few secs let the button go? All hell should break loose if it works. At least, that's the only way I was able to check mine Is the rest of the alarm system OK?

Normally they fail the other way around, i.e. they "make" contact and therefor go off continually. Interesting to hear of a failure where it remains quiet

I realised post battery swap i'd had the bonnet only hooked shut when the car was on semi permanent trickle charging. I'll check it again specifically with a button depress, set the alarm and then release the button. If i end up deaf i'll blame..............someone

FWIW, the alarm works but the plunger is staying stuck down. A sharp upwards tug on it produces a loud noise

Tried that at the same time but it's like it's two stage notched. I'll need to enqure about replacing the switch

Short of pumping it in and out a few (dozen) times to see if that makes it smooth out, I guess you're right. Having sold the car I can't look at mine for comparison, but I suppose it can't be taken to bits and cleaned can it?

All of £10.18p incl VAT and postal delivery. Five minutes under the bonnet and all is good. If only more BMW issues were as easily and cheaply resolved
