Boot!

I'm looking at the boot of my E53 and why it doesn't seem to release cleanly when unlocked. The mechanism keeps whirring away, despite being unlocked and it needs lifting just a little bit by hand to stop it.
On the inside of the upper part of the boot lid, next to the protruding lock part there is a rubber cyclinder (called a bump stop?) approx 1 inch long. This is secured by a torx bolt. There is an identical bolt on the other side but no rubber cylinder. Is this the case on all models or am I missing one? This might explain the lack of required up movement to clear the mechanism.
I'm not referring to the two bump stops in the rain channel either side of the edge of the boot lid, in case my rambling explanation doesn't make sense.
I'd be grateful for input on this to stop me having to flag down a passing x5 and persuade the driver to let me look at his boot.

one each side would make sense. Real oem is excellent, just struggling with it slightly as it makes reference to the relevant part, but it's not clear if it list two of the same or not.

Should have part number, quantity required and a vague price. Is deffo 2 I've just checked mine

There are definitely 2 bump stops. When I bought my car last year one of mine was mssing and one was broken so I replaced both. Quite shocked at the price though £10.74 + VAT each.
The part number is M51.24.7.141.879 and BMW call it a Buffer.
When the new ones went on the closing became quite stiff and you had to give it a bit of a push for the motor to catch and pull it closed. Still pretty much the same almost a year later.

I've only got one of these rubbery bumpers / buffers on my car LHS... that would explain the recent annoying rattly boot.
I'm going to see if there's a DIY alternative to the daylight robbery of the stealers... probably not!

just to be clear, I'm talking about only having one of the rubber things right next to the tailgate latch, not the buffers in the outer sections as referenced in this link....

I posted about this very recently. To swap/replace these bump stops, it requires removal of a lot of interior trim on the D post as the buggers bolt in from inside
Another stupid bit of BMW design like a headlamp out to swap an indicator bulb

Now with two bump stops in place. Bit fiddly to fix and the new one is a different shape to the old one, but it now means the boot actually closes and opens cleanly.

number 38 on the above link.
The part number on the package that mine came in was completely different. Might explain why its a different shape to the original. Cost about £10 (I think)

sorry to jump on this but anyone know if these would have been fitted to a 2002 model that doesnt have the motorised catch ??would answer a lot if they are

Quick check of real OEM shows the same diagram. Do you have the bolt heads either side of the latch?
