Slide-A-Boot (CV BOOT)

Hi Guys,

My CV boots look like they're on the way out, and possibly a MOT failure.

I asked my bro to do me a quote for his garage to replace the 2 front outer CV boots, but their labour is £65/ph (My bro is only a mechanic there so there's no movement on the price)

I just looked on eBay for the price of the boots alone and came across this Slide-A-Boot thing. It's an alternative to removing the driveshafts or going for the 'stick together' method:

Looking at this video it actually seems a half decent idea, any thoughts on this guys?

From what I've heard there rubbish, the glued seams pull open after a couple of hundred miles

These aren't the glued ones mate, you use that cone thingy (and lube) to just slide the whole boot straight over the CV joint so you don't have to remove the driveshafts.

No but you do have two remove everything else :cry:
The ones that you glue are the quickest, I always use superglue and a cable tie at each end, can be a bit messy though, but then the other method is hardly easy or clean either.
I'm not convinced and I will stick with the ones that are split and glue :driving:

If you are going to keep the car for a while , use genuine BMW boot kits and have them done correctly,they will last twice as long .
I would supply your own BMW boot kits and shop around for the labour quotes , most garages are quiet at the moment so you might get a good deal.

i bought two boots (ebay £3 each) split them with a scalpel straight down the middle, superglued them up 10k miles later and there fine. If i was paying labour i would get the whole driveshaft changed as there only £43 each complete of a place on ebay, and their top quality as i put them in my old x5 they also have 2yr warrenty

Well they look ok for an emergency. I've tried super glue on a belt for an LP turntable (vinyls you know) before to re-join after breaking. It worked for 2 minutes then broke due to fatigue where the belt had hardend due to the glue. Maybe this rubber or whatever is somehow different...2 years guarantee :D ....or what...a new CV joint :o

I had a split or rather a bit had gone missing where the steel clip had bitten through it. Fixed it up with this stuff

I get it cheap at work. It's that self grabbing tape that repairs leaks. Wont stick to the rubber but sticks to itself. After a good cleaning wrapped it into the groove then wound onto belows. High grade insulation tape over the top for crap and abrasion protection. Still there good and proper.

Wouldn't do it with a total failure though
