Wheel lock lost :o(
Wheel lock lost :o(
not a good way to start the year i guess. i was planing on balancing my wheels and trying to get everything lined up but i could not find my wheel lock. last time i used it was when i replaced the front control arms sway bar links etc which was over a month ago. that was around the time i tried to fit my winter wheels but could not. now without a lock i am clueless. i do not want to just force them off and having to look for another locking set. from the looks of it if i were to go the stealership i would need the code on the locking stud which i don't have. i went thru the owners manual but there is not a area where the number would be recorded like the radio, bluetooth codes etc. i am not sure if the stealership will be any help..i guess i'll just pray that i won't get a flat tire for the next two days. does anyone know if they can look up the wheel lock code by VIN #?
lesson learned
FYI... i would keep a note of the code on the wheel lock just in case if you deal with a situation like mine..

Would be worth checking the dealers first. I had my brakes done on an e39 a long time ago and the garage stripped out all 4 of my locking nuts with there air gun. I had go to a tyre fitter who had a special socket set. They hammered on a socket over the locker then undid them, I then replaced them at the dealer using the number on the lock key. I can't recall if the same number is on the locking bolt to be honest
Re: Wheel lock lost :o(
We lost the one off our E53 too. The last person to use it was the tyre company who swapped the rubber over several months before. There was no way we were ever going to find it again.
The Dealers have a full set of 'keys' and will match yours up to the kit and then they will order one for you. Even they don't know which one is used and it's not recorded against the build/VIN etc. By pure luck Parts had a spare one in stock for a car that they owned and didn't need anymore so I got it for free. There should be a number embossed into the casting - which I then noted in the Owners Manual 'just in case'. You will need to take some proof that the car is yours though (the V5C usually) - although some parts departments are less strict about this.
The one for the X6 just has a purple sticker on it, which apparently means nothing, and no number. Again no details are held by BMW or the Dealer. Mind you, unlike the E53, it has a slot in the boot into which it fits tightly, and I always check for it when the car comes back from service/winter tyre swap etc.

Note to self.......Make note of lock nut casting number, ( on all cars owned now & in future).

Re: Wheel lock lost :o(
We had the same issue with my wife's golf. No locking wheel nut so trip to the dealers for them to use their set to find the correct one. Only thing for us was it was actually cheaper for them to remove the old locking bolts with their own and replace the whole set with a new one....lol

Had this problem myself - most tyre fitters have a socket that grips the nut without key. Replaced them with 4 normal studs!

Any update kkodal? Wouldn't fancy risking my alloys to thieves by replacing with standard bolts to be honest, I'd rather spend £40 on lockers than new alloys and rubber

ordered a new set as stealership was no help without the code for my old one. they said they had a few in stock but no guarantee on fitment. that was the conversation i had over the phone.

I take it they don't have the master set then. All I did was took the car in and they tried the relevant keys for the E53 until the right one was found and went from there. I thought all Dealers were supposed to have a set of master's as that's how they identify the correct key to replace missing ones for any model.

Good news for you kkodal. I've just been out in the p*ssing down rain to take one of my locking nuts out. The number is stamped into the bottom of the wheel stud and matches the same number on the locking nut. If you can get one removed you'll find out what number lock key you need, you'll only need 1 bolt and the lock then.

thank you for the info. i got a phone call from the place where i work on my car called hobby shop and they said they had several locks in their toolbox and apparently mine ended up in there as well. i just went to check out to make sure it fits and what do you know it is a match
i just emailed to the place i ordered from and cancelled the order. now all i have to do is get a spare one for this. thank you all for your help on research. hopefully it won't be too expensive for a spare one.

they did not mentioned anything about a master one.
