Hi all, Ive a problem with the X that has been with me for some time, hopeing someone may point me in the right direction.... When I get up to about 60 mph I get a Hmmmmmmmmming sound, which I think is coming from the rear. It doesn't change note with rpm, nor does it get better or worse around corners,any ideas?

Could be wheel bearing, or tyre . I have had this before, changed the rear tyres and the noise stopped

i would check the wheel bearings, jack it up one corner at a time put one hand on the top and bottom of the wheel and check for play, as mattyp says i have different tyres on my 20" rims to my 22" and the 22s make allot more road noise at high speed i.e 60mph+ like you describe!

Thanks for the advise, I've tried jacking the car up and checking for movement top and bottom and all seems ok. As for the tyres, well I was thinking about them, they are Toyo proxies which have been on for about 20 months. I've read somewhere that they can suffer with noise after so long.. Problem is I only have one spare wheel to try and with not being 100% sure where the noise is coming from I' noy sure what I would achieve.

It's mighty hard to test a modern wheel bearing using that method. It used to work on cars of a bygone era but they have to be majorly shagged before you feel any movement when testing by hand with modern day items. Having said that, you need to find a way of eliminating the tyres first.

it works with an x5, i fitted two on my last x5, i had a drone and kept checking them until they were gone

I had more or less the same problem with 20 inch rear toyos changed them for bridgestones and now nice and quiet again.
looked hard at the tyres and could not see what was causing it and they still had 6mm on them.Do you know anyone local you could swap wheels with to test if this is the case before plumping to change tyres ?

I think I'll make some phone calls and try to get a loner set, so to speak. As been said I need to eliminate these first, before diving into wheel bearings. What about the prop donut bearing ?

Try to see if there is a member nearby who is on winter tyres so you can test a couple of summer tyres of them.

Now theres an idea........Not sure of anyone living near deepest darkest Rutland.
