What excatly does a ECU software upgrade do!!??

Hi Guys

can somebody advise out of curisoty to my myself.

As you know i hav recently ahd a new fuel pump installed and whislt it was at the INDY they informed me that the car had never had a ECU software upgrade/update since new (54 2005).

they updated the ECU with the latest software and all i can say is WOW

My question is how can a update cause so much of a differnce to the way the car drives, it feels like new!! smoother gear change, smoother driver, better pickup , no flat spots, just a more pleasurable drive all round!

It must have been driving like a 'dog' for me to ahve felt such an improvement.

Is this all down to the compariable of switching from windows 95 to Windows 7 !!! what excatly does the update do?? i would be very intrested in knowing? Are these known issues that BMW 'discover' over the years and 'iron' out with the updates???

Did your indy do the software upgrade, or did it need to go to the dealers for it?

Just curious as I would like to get mine checked, updated if possible...

The indy did it, they have all the BMW equipment. According to them it should have had at least 4 updates since 2004.

i would highly recommend it as i honestly cannot tell you the difference its made to the drive of my X.

thats why i would really like to know what it does? etc, i beleive from driving it around for the last couple of syas that MPG has aslo been improved.

Software up dates are made by the manufactures to fix bugs and problems or to improve the car
Early e53 3.0d where bad on fuel a software update was made to improve the mpg by updating the gear box software
You may of found the your pump pressure has been low for a long time so just changing the pump has brought the pressure back up allowing more fuel to flow out of the injectors giving you smoother car and better throttle response and so on
BMW software update will not give you any more power(unless it's 1 of the lower powered cars from Europe where you can opted for less power and pay a cheaper price and less tax then by programming the right software you can get the power back to normal as we have dome for a good few customers) as the max bhp and torque will always be the same

, it was only the pre fuuel pump that was replaced and not the main pump, its more on the smoother gear changes etc, its really improved.

i am looking to sell the car anyway but when i buy my E70 in a couple of months time i will be sure to bring it down to you for a remap as i have heard good stuff about you on this site

have had a good few of these pumps playing up,after the change customers have said the car dose drive better

How do you find out if the software is up to date?

Hi Jason - does an ecu remap cover off software upgrades at the same time or is there a separate charge for that ?

Remap price is for remapping the software that is on your car
As we have all the main dealer tools and they are up to date we can update your car software
This starts from Â£95 per Ecu

Some tuning companies will say they update your software when they remap your car which they don't its just a lie to get you to use them

When we update the software we do this 1st using our diagnostics system then after this we tune the car

You will need to put the car on some diagnostics that can show the hardware and software numbers
