Alternator - anyone know how much for a new one?

Hi all.
This morning the X only just started.
Then about three hours ago It failed to start - just lots of clicking.
Battery drained.
Tried to jump it from my jump starter unit and it just laughed at me.
So the RAC were called out.

Turns out the alternator has packed up and isn't charging.

Any ideas how much I can expect to pay for a replacement?

Just spent the thick end of £600 on new brake pads and discs. :headbang: :headbang:

Carparts4less list three 'pattern' types for under £150, or £462 for the Valeo one which is most likely the OEM option.

and here's the TIS for changing it.....http://tis.spaghetticoder.org/s/view.pl?1/00/30/73

here are two options oem alternators
refurb bosch http://www.oembimmerparts.com/catalog/i ... 318406.htm
new valeo http://www.oembimmerparts.com/catalog/i ... 666328.htm
it seems like they are not interchangable so you need to make sure what you have in you vehicle to order the right one.

if its discs and pads (and sensors) all round and your paying for them to be fitted then £600 is about right - I was quoted around £600 last year from BMW for OEM and around £500 from local trey/brake center for non OEM, sp nopt sure why you think theyre gold at that price. Maybe you haven't bought pads and discs for your X5 yet ..... :) ?

My alternator when on my old 3.0 years ago. I took it off, droped it into a a shop which recons alternators. It only cost me £50 to get it fixed. I wouldnt pay out for a new one.

I've done front pads. £50 for decent pads, discs are £40-£60 and wear sensors are £15 each. If I don't do the work myself and save myself the labour then I would take it to my local all round garage (£35 per hour) to have them done. It would only take an hour and a half tops which is why I'm a bit surprised at £600.

Thanks for all the helpful replies.

Just occured to me that I should be able to get this replaced on the extended warranty I took out! Doh!

Unless they've got some clause/loophole in the claim procedure that puts alternators under 'consumable parts'.

All parts are wear and tear items where warranties are concerned lol. Always worth a try

I recall early in my ownership of the current car the alternator seized causing some secondary issues. It ruptured the header tank! I was told it is water cooled, on the V8's anyway, and is very expensive to replace? c £400 iirc?

It was an AUC at the time so it just got fixed and i didn't of course see the workshop repair costs, thankfully.

My extended warranty plan covers the alternator and labour costs - phew!
Even got a courtesy car to drive round in for the next few days until it's done - a Citroen C1! - better than a poke in the eye...
...oh no hang on...
I just poked myself in the eye, and it was actually a tad more comfortable than the C1... :driving:
