windscreen wiper cleaning

I'm looking for recommendations please on what I can use the clean my windscreen wiper blades thoroughly apart from soap and water. I appear to have a build up of crud on the blades upon close inspection. The blades themselves seem fine. Can I use white spirit for example if I subsequently clean it off. I plan to use a silicon lubricant thereafter but wasn't sure if the white spirit might damage the rubber?

Use vinegar, I've used it and had it confirmed that it's the best to degrease them.

This for sure. I'm sure the AA used to recommend it.

I always mix vinegar with a little warm water before wiping over the wiper blade. You can see it works from the amount of crap that comes off.
