Am I right in thinking I should be able to plug my phone into this using a normal audio male/male connector and play the tunes through the TV AV option?
Mine doesn't! Just get lots of interferance and no sound.

i tried this too and got same result as you or at best an awful mono sound.
i think this socket is more for a video signal which might be stronger.
but you can buy for £35ish a stereo aux in lead from bmw which will work well with your method of replaying music. thats what i did to connect my ipod to the cars sound system.
it plugs into the wiring loom at rear of the obc.

obc = on board computer. the big widescreen tv thingy in the centre of the dash.
yes, the bmw aux lead will just connect into an empty plug on the loom at the rear of it. but check with your dealer first just to be sure.

one more question - does this replace the cd changer? BMW werent 100% sure. The IPOD kit does apparantly.

the aux in lead isnt an ipod specific lead just a generic headphone style jack output lead.
it wont affect your cd player.

ok thanks again - theres a few online that appear to replace the CD changer so the BMW kit looks better of the lot. BMW said about £57 (plus vat I guess)

Can someone kindly tell me how does the OBC come out?
Have just bought this from BMW - £57 for effectively 3 wires with a plastic connector on one end and aux socket on t'other. Disgusting. I was expecting something a little more attractive too - its a cheap metal plate screwed into a hole I need to drill in the glove!
edit: hmmm just seen an install where the socket had been taken off the plate and screwed into a hole drilled in the cigar tray. Looks like a good place to run it and the phone can then rest in the ashtry.

It's really easy.
The plastic surround needs unclipping from the obc. That the reveals the torx screws that need undoing.
Slide the obc out - job done

Any chance you could post up a picture of the lead could you ? It sounds suspiciously like one I have for a Renault magnum......( don't ask)
