Hi all

Just need to know if I can just replace the screw in valve that sticks out of the wheels? They are the metal type from the tyre pressure control system.

I Went to put air in one tyre yesterday and noticed that the threaded end of one of the valves had broken up. Took it to a local tyre place that said i'd need a complete new unit for the tyre pressure control system too, which i dont believe.

After searching real oem i came up with the part number 36146792829, which is just a screw in valve for about $13.00. Im hoping i can just buy this valve and replace the broken one, rather than having to replace the whole unit.

Any thoughts?

the valve has nothing to do with the tyre presure monitoring (i think) cos ive changed to non oem wheels, reset tyre pressure monitoring and its fine

You can change just the valve no problem. The sensor is screwed to the back of the valve and comes away seperatly.

brilliant. Thanks. Hopefully wont cost a fortune then! Ive got the wheel off the car at the moment and its deflated so can i fit the new valve without removing the tyre or not?

No Mate the tyre bead will have to be broken and the tyre removed to get at the sensor.
Shouldnt cost a lot at a freindly tyre shop.

So here's a question for the V8 owners. All the 3.0litre versions have an ABS based TPM system, but the petrols have ABS and sensor systems. Why both, or the use of TPM sensors? TPM sensor based systems are only mandatory in the US?

It seems to be the same even now on the BMW models with the diesels and certain petrol models that are not used in the US having just ABS TPM systems, but those that are also available in the US Market having both, or just the sensor based hardware TPM. Did the E53 V8 need sensor based rather than ABS based?

Personally I'd rather have a sensor based system as the ABS option only tells you there's a problem and not on which wheel. Non-RFT type tyres are easy to spot the flat one on, but RFT's are much harder. I recently had a 2" piece of steel punch a hole in a front RFT on the X6, and after having got the 'Tyre Pressure Loss' Red warning, the only way I could spot the failed tyre was to put a hand on the tread and feel the differene in temperature (low pressure tyres get hot).

I think it's just pre facelift have the sensors and post use the ABS???

The tps sensor is screwed to the back of the valve who tyre removal is required. The valves are purchasable separately as you have found out as I replaced all the valves on a previous 328ci when swapping alloys.

All sorted now. Thanks for the help. Just for refernece the valves cost £13.80 each from BMW, I bought 2 cos my other front one was a bit damaged too, and my local indy charged me £20 to fit the pair. Result.
