Just sold our E60 530D and now on the lookout for a diesel E53 facelift.
Having had Imprezas for most of my driving life, i need torque and after last winter i know i'd rather have the missus use a car with 4wd(even though every car slides) and diesel is the only way to go for us.
Anyways, hello and try not to get too annoyed with all my up-coming questions.

Welcome fella!
Ref the 4wd aspect and in wintery conditions, these are no good if you don't get winter tyres on them. So consider that too.
The Buyers Guide will help you with regards to issues on these diesel cars. Yes they have good torque but they have issues with the auto boxes and the turbos. Lots to read and think about!

Welcome along drb5
........as for the winter tyres these cars are better with them but are fine without and they are not compulsory with carefull driving
AW8 will testify to this after his trip last year in rough conditions without winter tyres.
Having said that it is dependent on where you live aswell and if i came across a spare set cheap enough i probably would get some to make the winter driving safer.

Welcome indeed.
Uh ... AW8's winter story from last year was that he ended up in his back garden, didn't he?

Nice welcome, thanks guys!
I realise 4wd doesn't make it fool-proof, but the parents had an X5 35D M-Sport, so i could compare grip in most conditions and i always felt it was more surefooted than the E60. I will still consider a spare set of wheels/tyres though.
Got a maximum of 13k to spend, but not looking to spend every last penny. unless the car is absolutely worth it. Took me a long time getting the 5 series for the right money, but with a missus in the background, it's never easy.
