£7000 x5 3.0d would you

Post by wad187 » Thu Nov 03, 2011 7:09 pm

Hi every one iv been looking at the site for a while now trying to make my mind up weather or not to get a x5 so i registered today.

my car history E30 318,E36 318is,E36 320 convertible,E46 323, and my last bmw E46 330d 184bhp sold this and got a golf tdi 105bhp as my girlfriend could not drive the 330d with seat right forward she could not press the clutch all the way in.

so im selling the golf as its shit and its not big enough for the baby push chair and shopping (thats my excuse anyway) always loved my bmw s so im after a X5 3.0d but i only have about £7000.

so its going to be a preface lift with the 184bhp engine with over 100k on the clock my 330d was ok but im thinking the size of the x5 it must be really sluggish with the same engine am i right also do you think these x5 s are getting on abit now and best avoided.

is they a big differance between the facelift 218bhp and the 184bhp.

if i got a 184bhp chipped would it be about the same as a 218bhp

also would my short girlfriend struggle to drive a x5 or does the seat have good adjustment.

i no they is a lot of questions here but i have lots more hahaha

thanks guys

Due to the budget, he is looking at pre-facelift :)

High mileage doent mean a car is best avoided, but look/ask for evidence of turbo/gearbox repair/replacement for peace of mind. Better still buy a manual if you can find one. Some indys reckon that it's not adviseable to put extra load on the box by remaping a prefacelift- others may disagree.

A well maintained higher mileage car may need less work in coming years than an 80k example that hasn't had expensive to sort parts replaced/repaired.

Either way buying a used X5 is never going to be a cheap ownership experience. You should expect to pay hundreds or even thousands more a year to keep it well maintained if you ignore things that need sorting it will let you down eventually &/or be unwated when you sell it later. I have spent £1600 on mine since August & it still would benefit from hundreds to fit new disc pads before too long !

I would keep back a grand or so after buying so as to sort any issues later found or that may arise shortly after buying.

Read the buyers guide at top of this forum area if you havent done so already.

Oh & get your partner to test drive rather than buying something she might not want to drive.

I agree with Penny about the parking...... :D :D careful how you go, guys!!!! :D

FWIW, I am 5' 1" and manage to adjust the Xes seat perfectly for height, steering wheel rake, etc etc. Perfect driving position. Partner is 5'3" and also manages a perfect adjustment of the seat etc. The pedals are in a very comfortable position for driving and the X has to be one of the best cars for driver and passenger comfort.
