Hi,
I am looking to buy an X5 with a max budget of £30K , I am not a high mileage user , perhaps 7-8 K per year so am thinking petrol version, I would be interested to hear any views you may have as I have never owned a SUV before but now need more space .I am moving from a Porsche 996 Turbo.

Have recently seen 08 / 58 plates with full spec M Sports for that sort of money, at independants though, add £2-3K from BMW.
This is nice with aero kit

Hi, I have seen that advert already, you really do seem to get a hell of alot of car for your money, the 4.8's generally seem to be higher spec it's just the MPG that concerns me and that the diesel may be a bit dull (slow).

I've never driven a 996 but I imagine a diesel with feel slower that an out and out sports car and definitely different. That said though, the BMW diesel engines have loads of torque and I'd not say my 35d feels dull. It's leased so I have no emotional attraction towards defending it!

I have the 4.6 that gives about 17.9mpg, that is with a lot of short journeys, about 5000 miles a year I believe that the 4.8 gives slightly better mpg.

I get 17.8mpg normal, 19mpg if careful. On a motorway run you can get 25mpg, a mate with 3ltr TDV6 Range Rover Sport only gets 25mpg.
Mines a 58 plate 4.8ise, its a lot of car for less than £30k if you don't mind the mpg.

I wouldn't describe by 40d M Sport as "dull" and average of 32mpg is good!

Anything but 'dull' is the 40d!!
It makes the older 218bhp E53 look sluggish even though that was a pretty quick car (for an SUV). My X6 with that powerplant is very quick considering it weight more than an E53, is faster, more economical and handles with it. I suspect they're still a tad more than £30k having only arrived in 2010. Mpg above 32 is no problem, even when driven enthusiastically. Of course if the shifter is moved to the left, and left there so the full rev range is used, 32mpg is a little more of a challenge, but 25-27 still possible.
